Not sure what's wrong with my 50D but occasionally when I take a long exposure, the bottom 1/4 of the image is darker than the rest. It doesn't happen all the time but when it does, it's when the camera is facing the sun. On normal exposures, there is no sign of the dark area.
Any thoughts on what could be the cause?
Here's an example:

Does it only happen when you have the camera strapped on your car?
Anyway, the shutter slit moves vertically. You're seeing a VERY slight speed-up in the upper portion of its travel, or alternatively a very slight drag in the lower portion (the top of the image is on the bottom of the sensor). You're probably only seeing it at slow shutter speeds, and in the darker areas. Most likely the shutter needs cleaning, it is probably sticking a little.
That's my best guess anyway.

I agree with Robert, it's probably the shutter beginning to stick. I don't know if it's even possible with modern shutter mechanisms to effectively clean them. It may be a sign of impending shutter failure. It may also be that it will operate this way for a long time. There's probably no way to predict.

anywhere from 30 seconds (like this shot) and longer.
Darn, sounds like I need to take it in and possibly have the shutter changed then.
Luckily Hawaii has a Canon service center. Hopefully it's not too expensive to do.
