i think my wife will kill me if i get too much 'studio' stuff at the moment since this is a hobby and at the moment some of those setups may be overkill for what i'm doing. :)
i'll try out doing a bunch of stuff in b&w for composition, and i hadn't considered that i might get color problems by using separate flashes... good to consider. :)

I dont questions my wife spending habits and she doesn't question mine. mutually beneficial for both of us :)

For those strobes, could you do me a favour.

If you have a light meter, could you stand 1 meter from the bare light with iso 200 and 200 t, what F stop do you get.

Thanks

I will try that and let you know. I don't have light-meter with me, but I can barrow one from our studio. I assume you want the full power measurement?

RamblinR... ok, I have the "Minolta Auto Meter IV F" that I tested a few things for you.

Light: Neewer 180
6 feet distance (1.8 meter)
Full power direct facing to the meter
Speed 1/125
ISO 200
reads F 11.7 and it is consistent each time. However if I try two tests in a row without waiting for full load, second reading gets me F 8. Load time around 2 seconds.

I kept the distance, 6 feet (1.8 meter), put shoot-thru white umbrella, turned down the power of the strobe all the way. Readings were

ISO: 120
Speed: 1/500
F 2.8

I used D1x with Nikkor 50mm F 1.8 lens and took one shot of my face.

this is resized version of out of camera image. I think it came out ok. 1/500 sec ability of the camera helps me a lot to bring down the F number to get those soft background :)

I hope this helps

Thanks for that.
Will check similar with my flashes to see how much they differ.
