there was something really fishy going on. my score since last night went, 3, 4, 5, 4, now it's 5.8
I wouldn't mind if it kept the same rate of increase upwards.

cosmicassassin: . . . In this context, score is meaningless. Where you place is the only relevant factor, just like golf. . . .
I agree. I'm pretty new here and this is something that I have wondered since I joined. For me, the % is more important than the score. Why is the selection of the five "automatic" profile images based on score and not percentage? I really don't care much one way or another, but I find it puzzling. |

If you look back at some of the challenges, you'll find the number of entries ranges from 7 to 1108. For those that entered the challenge with 7 entries, even last place could be awesome, but get a 0% placement by percentage. Conversely if you enter the challenge with 1108 entries and get a score of say 6.8, which could be a personal best, you'll find yourself somewhere in the 60% range due to the number of entries. |

Thanks, James. That makes perfectly good sense. In my limited experience I have seen a range from about 75 to about 250, but nothing like what you are describing. Appreciate the insight. |

I still think % is a better gauge than score.
Only two people in 1543 challenges have managed to get above the average 5.5 score with a 0% placement. Even then they were not what I could call awesome scores.
Also getting a 6.8 with 60% is near impossible. It's hard to pull stats for the 60% mark, but no one has ever scored a 6.8 at the 50% mark. Not only that but only 13 of 1543 challenges pulled a 6.0+ at the 50% mark.
I guess it depends more on how people want to be judged. Pay attention to percentage if you want to see how you are doing in relation to your peers. But if you want to know how well an image is received, pay attention to score.
I personally like percentage better because score can differ a lot depending on how strict editing is and the subject matter of the challenge. I can pull off a high score much easier on an expert or advanced challenge than I can with a minimal or basic. The loose rules of expert and advanced let me make more stunning pictures, but the score doesn't tell me how well I did in relation to others. |

It is interesting to see how your entries fall depending on the way you sort them.
For instance, this shot would be my #2 on my highest ranked, if ranked by %:
And this shot would be #5
And they both suck compared to my other entries... at least, in my mind. I guess those challenges just had lower average scores and were judged harsher overall.
At least they give us the ability to sort our entries however we please.

The challenge is Photoshop terms and in minimalist editing. If you are unsure if the title refers to a Photoshop term, than look it up before you DNMC the image. If you think the image has not been done under Minimilist editing than request a validation BUT vote as if it is legal. If it isn't legal than it will be DQéd and your vote won't make any difference. But if it is legal and you have voted it as if it isn't legal...than you will hammer an image that is not worthy of your low vote.
I see many images in there that utilise the not so well known Photoshop terms....and I suspect that many are getting DNMCéd due to the voters lack of knowledge. Think before you vote...as your vote can make all the difference.

I've just handed out a few 3s on my first run through but i often bump things up a bit on a second. That said though, there are lots of different types of voters and i'm one of those that really doesn't care less about DNMC and it doesn't cross my mind. I vote on the image as it stands first and if its a clever and interesting take on the challenge second. If it's a, to me, boring and dull image that i have seem a zillion times before i tend to vote low even if is technically great and could easily be accepted by Alamy for stock for yet another dreary business pamphlet. I'm not saying any of the images in this challenge are like that but that may explain a 3 from me on some shots. Different strokes etc. |

Might or might not have been you, but my next vote... ALSO A FRIGGIN 3!!!!
The only scale this image is a 3 on is a 1-4 scale or MAYBE a 1-5 scale... Certainly not a 1-10 scale.
What an arse pain.

Maybe some voters feel it's DNMC? Then you'd vote differently, yes?

I have no idea which photo is yours, nor have I voted this challenge....just saying. |

True... if they don't own photoshop or understand google, they might think it was DNMC. :)

So what you're saying is your photo is objectively awesome across the board. There's no possible way that anyone could subjectively think otherwise.
I always thought the beauty of art was the fact that it's subjective. Guess I figured wrong.

Hope i break into the 6's, fingers crossed...
Done all my voting on the challenge also (100%). Some great ideas and photos and some that kinda missed the point and possibly thought they had to use the tool rather than represent it i feel.

I thought the photos could represent either the tool or the result that tool creates, especially cause the challenge was photoshop terms not photoshop tools.
