Wow! I am amazed at some of the photos in this challenge!
I thought I did a really good job with the minimal editing, but some of these pictures look like they could easily be advanced editing. Really shows the mastery some people have with their cameras and lighting!

Mine is doing much worse than expected. Considering the genre of my image, I really feel like it is a fantastic shot for minimal editing.
I was expecting a 5.8+

many entries are crazy good. remember to vote with the assumption it's legal. the usual narcs will be blistering their fingers on the 'suspect a violation button' this challenge.

I'm quite sure that trolls could cast low votes on mine suspecting that the image is not legal. I'm around 5.8...

Ditto... mine's a minimum 6... how anyone on any scale is hitting the 5 or lower is beyond me. And that's not being biased... I've had some where I know people didn't get it or more often I didn't deliver... but based on the history and photos of this site, I'm shocked.

Oh yeah, I'm slightly above 6 now... I was just commenting that I am shocked with every vote that's five and under. An "average" shot would be 5.5. So every vote below that is saying it's a "below average" shot...

I also think people still vote comparatively... (voting for each photo compared to other photos in the challenge) like they are awarding first, second, third, etc... This is like golf folks... there is no "defense" except for troll voting. Each photo should stand on its own as a photo and then the scores sort themselves out at the end.

In golf, there is no defense... each player plays their game and what happens, happens. Every player could shoot lousy and the low score wins. Every player could play great and the low score wins. There is no "curve" and obviously the high-score wins here, but I think everyone understands.

EDIT: And to that end, I don't care as much about placement here... I'd love to eventually get a ribbon (perhaps in a challenge where only I can enter I MIGHT win one), but I look at the score. If I take a great shot and it's rated honestly high, then if 100 people score better than me, I would still be happy. We all gain here.

Then you obviously don't understand how this works.
In any given challenge there's usually over 100+ voters. Since voting is subjective and how to use the scale from 1-10 is subjective, any method where the voter can describe how they vote is entirely fair. You may not agree with how they vote, but it's mathematically sound as long as they vote on every photo consistently. So if someone wants to use the entire scale, or only 1s and 10s, or whatever, it's fair.

In this context, score is meaningless. Where you place is the only relevant factor, just like golf.

A good book on this subject is Gaming The Vote by William Poundstone.
