howdy all-- my Western Digital drive (external) is making funny beeping noises and sometimes not showing up in finder, although it normally will show itself after a reboot of the computer system.
I'm going to back it up tonight, but does anybody have any tips or had this experience before?
thanks for you help :)

I would go to the company website and see if they have "codes" listed. I have a WD external and I have never recieved any beeping from it.

They might also have a diagnostic utility that you can run on the disk to see what's up. I know Seagate has one that you can use, but I'm not sure if it's for all makes.

Mine died shortly after the beeping started. I would back it up ASAP and then try and figure out what is wrong with it.

what you're hearing from the hd is most likely the mechanism failing, hd's dont beep or have beep codes. They can however make strange noises when the stylus or spindle is going bad

BTW, WD and Maxtor make (imo) notoriously bad hd's, I would get a Seagate when you replace it.

I have a seagate and it's held up for years on end! I'm backing up everything that is on it right now (on Discs), so that I can "erase/restore" it so that it can be used with my Mac, as it was originally used for a PC.

ETA: Reformat HD. That's the word I was looking for... REFORMAT. Too early in the morning. Geesh.

Sucks, the beeping sound is pretty much any drive's swan song. Hope you recover your data.

Nicky, it's the weight of all those ribbons and HM's you've been getting recently !

But seriously, sorry to hear this and I hope you can retrieve everything.
