Nah! The believers just need atheist extremists to be the bad guys so that their stories have a happy ending. Atheists don't really care so much to refute God's existence. What's in in it for them? "You believe in God, good for you, I don't, so what?" The believer has to dangle the carrot to build the flock, the atheist just goes to the beach at the end of the week......8~)

Yeah but what about when policy is influenced by religious beliefs? Eg, gay right rights, abortion, science...

I hope those who believe that the influence about The legal right to be married if you are of the same sex has more to do with religion than to do with the fact Corporations including the greatest one of all Government does not want another group to be able to have insurance, pensions and a tax break. If they figure out a way to take it away from everyone they will. Whether or not someone agrees with your feeling of what is right or wrong it does not give them the right to interfere neither should they be interfered with based on their feelings. I have a simple policy if I go to a store or work a job or eat at a resterant and do not get treatedthe way I expect Then I simply move on and never go back. If everyone did the same and told their friends about how bad their experience was soon if the place continues to be that way they will go out of business. Due to lack of Consumers or employees. Abortion is a moral issue. Some feel one way some feel another. Right now it is legal in almost all places in the world. I think it should be left up to ones conscience to decide that one. Science wow where to start. Science at one time said Black is Black and White is White. Later Science then discovered actually Black and White are all colors. There will never be an end to understanding and learning. Things change over time including science and religion. I love to tell people I went through a divorce a little over a year ago, but was never legally married. Not even common law. Marriage is a state of being. Loving someone and committing one self to that person and no other. Divorce is a legal matter. Separating property and families. If you want to get married then do so just understand a piece of paper proves nothing. Each of us will only live so long in this world. Enjoy life to it's fullest. Let go of things that truly do not matter. Trust me going from a very nice income to unemployment has changed my expectations in life. Now I earn what I can, provide my own insurance"no it is not cheap" and go fishing when there is nothing else I can do. Retire early so you can enjoy life. Some will ask how. Simple live a life that you can afford to enjoy. I hope you find this an enjoyable read

BTW Don't care what your sexual preference, religion, political party, skin color, or personal view points. I invite everyone into my life and escort them to the door when they make my life a headache. Thats what I believe and how I live my life. Now you go believe whatyou want to and live your life. Remember Be Happy Happy Happy

I thought the link was interesting, but, honestly, from MY perspective it's a little saddening. In my eyes it would be analagous to a place set up to enjoy the smell of a well prepared steak. People would come in and smell the butter and aroma of the juices and say, "wow, doesn't that smell wonderful!" but never get to experience the actual steak. We would be worshipping a ghostly visage instead of the real thing.

I didn't see anything in the article of the concept that would prevent a viewer from seeing their God in such a place. It would be akin to a church of another faith, perhaps?

That's what I was thinking...

Perhaps. But I would feel uncomfortable conjuring the exact opposite inspiration as intended by the creator. If I knew it was meant for godless contemplation I would not see otherwise.

I read it a few times, but I keep on getting stuck on, "... religion still continues to generate debate, particularly when it comes into contact with science."

Just read another interesting article covering the interface between science and philosophy. Interesting to see there is some pushback against what is sometimes termed "scientism" and it doesn't always come from religious circles.

A Darwinist mob goes after a serious philosopher

Would you feel the same way in a Buddhist temple? A Muslim mosque? I think it a bit sad? lacking? that you can't find your God in places that weren't specifically designed for you to do so. The intent of the creator really has little to do with what you see and feel, in my opinon, much as many of our photographs have a completely different reaction than the one intended; as some works of fiction create completely new reactions in readers than those perhaps intended by the author.

I understand your thought process, but I would suggest you lack a insider's perspective on religion. To you they are all interchangeable pieces like Legos. I don't mean that as a knock, but just trying to shed possible light on what you are missing. I don't know what really resonates with you but would suggest you try to analogize by finding meaning inline with this resonance in something meant to invoke the opposite.

If that doesn't work, then just recontemplate my analogy with the steak and aroma. In my own worldview the sadness comes because I would see a celebration of the steak aroma (ie. godless awe) without offering the real steak (ie. at the least the Numinous but, properly, God himself). While I may feel I know what the aroma points toward, I would mourn for those who thought the aroma was the whole story.

Again, my own point of view. Your results may vary...

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but be careful with the way you parse things. You said you find it "sad" or "lacking" that I can't find my own God in a godless shire. It's hard to put yourself into another's mind. We'll leave it at that.

I thought the Christian God was omni-present. Is their some sort of force-field around a mosque or temple which repels God? If so, you better hope the atheists don't reverse-engineer it ... ;-)

As a low brow, uneducated, godless heathen - can anyone please tell me why I am not supposed to eat red meat on Good Friday ???? As I have a hankering for some beef ribs. ( not that we do hankering or beef ribs in Australia) but no one can tell me the reason why this "tradition" exists.

I don't know the why, but my grandparents didn't eat meat on any Fridays.

It's an act of penance. Christ died on the Cross on "Good Friday", so meatless Fridays, a form of "abstinence", are a way of remembering this. Pope Paul VI changed this from a year-round obligation to a Lenten obligation in the 60's, if I recall correctly. But I'm fuzzy on it.

The rules have changed over the centuries, starting with general fasting on many days throughout the year. By the 1500's we were up to a limit of one lunch a day during Lent, and then evening snacks were allowed, and by the early 20th century it was just fasting during Lent with abstinence on Friday and Saturday with fewer people required to participate. Ireland was permitted to move the Saturday abstinence to Wednesdays, and the U.S. was exempt from Saturdays but were only allowed meat once a day throughout the week. In America, the Friday after Thanksgiving was dropped so we could have leftovers, and the the current voluntary 'no-meat-on-Fridays' and fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday was decreed by Pope Paul VI in 1966. Chicken counts as meat, but not chicken broth or beef gravy and fish are OK. Sounds like a bunch of made up rules? You betcha.

Here's an interesting history on the fish aspect.

Of COURSE it's "made up". ALL human/institutional rules are "made up". Rituals are, and always have been, designed and imposed for specific reasons particular to the particular institution, religion, whatever. Don't forget to remove your hat during the playing of the National Anthem, sir!

I'm visiting my parents this weekend for the Easter. You can be sure that tomorrow's dinner will be exclusively fish. But I usually sneak out at lunchtime for a burger just to piss off God.

Actually, the most offensive meat I could eat tomorrow would be Pork Chops. Washed down with beer. Are there any deities who wouldn't be offended by that menu?

ETA: Yay! I just found out there's a minimum age limit of 14 on not eating meat tomorrow. So it's gonna be a pork burger feast for me and my son tomorrow lunchtime!

God didn't write the rules so you would be pissing off the church or it members, i'm sure God doesn't really care. Its just a way to show your devotion, its just amusing watching the rules change to make being devout easier. Fasting isn't supposed to be fun, giving up something isn't supposed to be easy.

why is pork such a filthy animal when crabs and lobsters are bottom feeders and considered fish, beer is unacceptable but wine is ok?

The great Flying Spaghetti Monster approves. (Bless His Noodly Appendage.)

No Pastafarian would ever object to such a delicious and sensible meal. :D

Extra points for breading them with a milk-wash, and then frying in lard.
