I think that if the USA decided to invade and take over Canada, along with the promise of tax amnesty for 'former' Canadians for the year of 2011, there would be celebrating in the streets.
Just a thought.
=======
Side note: The duty free limits for Canadians cross-border shopping in the US has been raised from $50 for 24 hours to $200 and from $400 for 48 hours to $800. After two years of a dollar around parity, and prices of Canadian shit 50% higher...
Hello... can we get rid of the border? Clearly Canadian government sucks.

They put chemicals in the water to keep us down. The damn Leafs haven't won the Stanley Cup since 1967, yet the arena is filled for every game! They can't even make the playoffs! I'm thirsty. I think I need a glass of water.

Living in Politician Central (Ottawa) and working for the Canada Border Service Agency has given me NO insight as to how things actually work with the border - it's like they have a "hop to it" mat for policy making and the biggest tattle-tale gets the promotion because they pointed out more flaws with their coworkers than anybody else.
I think you got the thread title wrong though as a lot of us are now going south of the border since the dollar is so much closer to parity. :) |

yeah, and we have to pay duty... at least with inter-state purchases you don't void warranties or pay duties when you cross the state line. :) |

Tell you what. We can do this without bloodshed.
We'll take your health care and you can
take our taxes. |

...and of course you would gladly let go of your health insurance plan(S), dental plans and prescription plans.
Not me my friend...I might pay more in taxes but I don't have to worry about the hospital owning my house should I need medical intervention.
Viewed from another perspective. :O)

Considering the amount of items I have purchased in the USA over many years I seriously doubt that we pay any form of duties.
I declare absolutely everything I purchase in the USA and other than the HST I have never been asked to pay duty. With regards to camera and electronic gear, I like to purchase things from Abe' of Maine since there is no tax in Maine and they ship for free.
Mind you, if you have items shipped to you from a supplier in the USA then you would be called upon to pay "Brokerage Fees" which can be rather high.

I still have a bad memory of my ticket in Brantford, Ontario. A cop had someone pulled over and I didn't go into the next county to give him a wide berth, so I received a $500.00 ticket. Actually, It was only $490.00. |

Come to New Hampshire. We're tax free too.
Personally, I think that sooner or later we're going to annex both Canada and Mexico.

What will the US name Canada once it's annexed?

I worked for IBM for a number of years and had 90% dental/health coverage. Now working for the federales i get 100% covered since my wife and i both are gov't employees and cross-coverage claims work that way for us.

In Ottawa, yes. But now that there are going to be 19000 civil service jobs cut, that's going to change things drastically. |
