I resize with FastStone Image Viewer. May I use the sharpen tool there to sharpen?

As long as it is just "sharpen" without any adjustments or settings you can make, then you can use it.

Thanks. The settings are Sharpen, USM, and Blur. I just chose Sharpen. Then there is an Amount slider - from 0 to 100. I picked 5. There's a way to see the original image and I looked - the difference was imperceptible. I'm fine with no sharpening, though. I like my entry and really want to do this right :)

I believe if the sharpening tool has a slider it can't be used for this type of challenge.

Thanks Paul :) and as for the deletion, am sure I can do better so not worth trying to recover ;)

So what software do people use to resize and sharpen?

Photoshop.

InfranView-- FREE, fast, agile for this type of challenge... and also uses most PS filters (.8bf files) for more general editing needs

Can't wait till roll over. I think I've got my best shot yet... hoping to get my second ever 6+ score (the last was only a 6.01).

So can you run Sharpen, then run Sharpen again? Or is only one pass allowed?

All you can do is resize and one pass of sharpening. (NOT unsharp mask!) You can optionally rotate 90 degrees to account for how you may be holding the camera, and you can desaturate, but only a straight desat, no form of controllable desaturation.

Nevermind, caught this the second read through! Thanks!

It is highly recommended (by me, anyway) that you resize and sharpen (if necessary) your image yourself prior to submission.

To me it's a matter of someone else doing the processing. Resize is part of processing.

You can do more than one pass of Sharpen, but only one step in resizing. For my own current Free Study entry (also conforming to the Minimal rule set) the editing (done with IrfanView) steps are:

-Rotate 90° CCW
-Resize to 25% of original
-Sharpen
-Sharpen
-SaveAs JPEG at 100% quality = 247KB

It's a matter of memory, not of minimal editing ;)

Anyways, just wanted to say that I think this entry of mine will be a new PB, it's at least a personal favorite photograph. Here's hoping you all feel the same.

we've all thought it, and we've all learned the hard way that this thinking almost always leads to disappointment. but i wish you luck bucking the trend!

True. I've done it... time and time again. MAYBE if I STOP saying that I shot a new personal favorite, my score will soar?
Probably not.

If you like it, then that's all that should matter... if others like it... that's just an added bonus. :)

My favorite photo I've entered to a challenged shoe'd up the brown quite easily. My solace is I've sold the photo, so DPC'ers be damned.

i used InfranView also (big fan).

you did your resize by percentage. i did mine by specifying the longest side to 800 pixels and allowing InfranView to scale proportionally the other side.

i assume those would both be legal ways to resize??

The general wisdom is that resizing in 25% increments preserves the integrity of the image...

I have never had so many ideas for a challenge as this one. Last night was the first time that I've shot with three different cameras, using different lenses, etc... all to insure that I get a look that will come out great with minimal editing. Shooting RAW+JPG so that the RAW files will still be there if I want to take these further (or use in another challenge :) That was if I forget to reset it, I won't lose anything on the next shoot.

But dang I keep coming up with ideas for this one. Usually it's scramble for one at the last minute and hope it's received.

One problem though is that one of the cameras I'm using, the new Pentax K-01, will shoot different sizes of RAW... yep. I can select 1:1, 3:2, 4:3, 16:9 and it shoots it and stores the RAW as that. So I can "crop" before pressing the shutter.

Downside of this is: 1) I just told everyone, so if I enter a square photo, people will know it's me. and 2) people will assume it's illegal and rate it lower (in spite of the rules to the contrary). :)
