Almost nothing is allowed after you press the button, but before that moment you can do (almost) anything you want :)

All you can do is resize and one pass of sharpening. (NOT unsharp mask!) You can optionally rotate 90 degrees to account for how you may be holding the camera, and you can desaturate, but only a straight desat, no form of controllable desaturation.

Still haven't found my inspiration for this challenge.

And my first minimalist challenge. I've been waiting for this... crap.

I think you can sharpen more than once.
At least that's what I remember from a previous minimal challenge.

Yup -- there doesn't seem to be a limit on sharpen -- but you can only do sharpen, no sharpen more, no sharpen edges, etc.

That's correct -- you can use the "regular" Sharpen filter more than once. However, you can only resize once (resize in a single step).

Just uploaded my original instead of my resized and regular sharpened one (I like this challenge, although my entry probably suck). Got no complaint about an image size of 4MB and sizes far above the ones that are allowed. Started to try a new topic about this in the "web site suggestion", but the "New topic" button has gone :( Replaced my original with the resized one btw.

Note: made a remark about this at https://getsatisfaction.com/dpchallenge

It was brought up before anyway, a few weeks ago, when someone actually submitted and had accepted a 3,200-pixel original, which the site resized for him :-) Some of the real hard cases were saying it should be DQ'd because the SUBMITTED image was too large, even though the one we viewed and were voting on was the correct size...

R.
04/04/2012 04:32:39 PM · #40
That would be a bad reason for a DQ. Especially because this site normally does a good check on sizes.
04/04/2012 04:43:20 PM · #41
If you let the site resize your image you have no control over any post-reduction sharpening or JPEG quality.

It is highly recommended (by me, anyway) that you resize and sharpen (if necessary) your image yourself prior to submission.

Can anyone explain why you can't convert from raw?

Because in converting you can make post-capture adjustments to tone, contrast, white-balance, sharpening, etc., which are prohibited in Minimal. The captured JPEG incorporates/commits you to the settings in effect at the time you press the shutter.

Because to convert from RAW involves manipulating all the variables of the image, and no manipulation is allowed in the minimal ruleset. There's no way to police a RAW conversion to be sure it is "straight from camera", if that term even has any meaning for a RAW image.

Dang General is too fast...

Only because I was just here anyway ... usually by the time I've typed my answer there are already three others posted ...

ETA: ... and probably two of them by you ... ;-)

My minimalistic mind just managed to delete the original for my submission, best hope the weather stays the same for my reshoot :)

And sharpening? why can you sharpen an image in minimal editing? am guessing you can't de-noise it?

thanks for the answer

If you "just" deleted it try using recovery software to get it back.

You can sharpen because it's usually necessary after resizing, so it's the one post-processing function we allow -- the intent it to restore the reduced version to essentially the same appearance as the original.

No, you can't de-noise ...
