I was editing an image (psd), trying to get a mask to copy from one layer to another. I must have clicked something obscure, because now I see NO pixel data whatsoever on any layer, not even mask layers. All I get is the chequered background stuff. I've opened other images and they immediately show just the background stuff - what on earth have I done? Help please.....?

I'm no good at CS5 but sounds like a transparent background. Maybe you can do a search on CS5 and undo transparent background and see what you turn up.

I still have no idea what happened, but I saved what I had open, shut everything down, reopened photoshop and everything was back. Thankfully.
