As the most recent challenges at DPC did not inspire me to participate (in a serious manner at least) I have had another look at 1x. My previous marnet account has expired few weeks ago. I have not used it for a few months. Following the recent success of Nicky and Anita I thought I will give it another go but I wanted to have a fresh start. I opened a new account margaretn, same name as at DPC. I have spent some time looking at the recently published photos and I can see a mixed bag. There are also some really good and some very average images in the voting process.
So is there a bias and inconsistency at 1x? What do others think? What was your experience? |

I seem to be having a problem lately connecting with the viewers here and am 0 for 8 on 1x... Not real sure what to do with that. |

I do notice a lack of a question mark in the thread title. Interesting. |

I've never made it on 1x.
I don't particularly wonder why, I just figure the stuff I'm sending isn't good enough. |

I feel it's maybe right photo at the right time.
Margaret, study hard what they like, there is an overall theme they seem to love. Dark moody photos, (up my alley) fantastic portraits with unusually amazingly looking children or teens (especially with freckles) They also seem to favor blur done really well.
A lot of their images, I can' replicate b/c I'm not an expert editor. The photo I had published had very little editing, but it had a load of mood. Stick to moody shots, and eventually you'll probably get one published.
Anyway I don't think you should stress out too much, it's not the end of the world if you don't have a photo published on 1x, I only really did it for fun, so when I found out by paulbtlw that I had a photo published there, I hardly believed him. If I could do it, without ever ribboning on DP, I figured most could.

Bias and inconsistency in the world of art? Why that's unheard of. |

If it's anything like it use to be when they were transparent and told you the reason for the rejections, then its not inconsistency insomuch as it's nickpicking to the extreme. If one pixel is off in there minds then bam rejection, change and then bam acceptance. It would be better if they put more emphasis on the substance rather than the window dressing but that's not who they are. |

personally i find the "editors choice" at 500px way more appealing. my new goal to get an image on there.
i never got the draw to make it on 1x. |

Many of the shots I submitted to 1x were ones that did very well here, including several ribbons. I finally had the last of my 8 freebies accepted there, but by that time I had decided it wasn't for me.

Take a look at this shot, and the photographers work, which I totally adore. He seems to underexpose his photos, or manipulates it in photoshop afterwards, but look how incredibly effective it is. This guy is extraordinary, to the degree that I would love to emulate him, but I reckon if you entered a shot like this on DP, you would get low balled for, having an image which was over-exposed.

Well, I don't know, Anita. There are many great photos on 1x. It depends on your personal likes and dislikes what style you like.
I have thought about this and regret giving 1x another try. Waste of $49. And I really dislike their account deletion policy - it takes 3 months!! It took me 5 minutes to delete my account at Fotoblur! I suspect this is to ensure that they do not have to issue any refunds. |

If this was posted in DPC it would have been a 10 and instant fave no matter what the challenge. An excellent image. |

I know it's just brilliant, and so is all his stuff. Not sure if it's DP friendly though, but that's the difference between these sites I guess. |

It's been 5 or 6 months since I've even been able to view a picture on 1x, much less submit a photo. Every time I go to visit the page I get this:
Query failed : You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '1332768043","1332768043","21647")' at line 1
WTF? I've tried different firefox and explorer, and I've tried dumping cookies and the like, but even my IT guy is stumped. I just found out that my membership expired and I didn't even hardly get to use it. :( Any suggestions?

I've had problems with them from the very beginning. I tried to submit something a long time ago, and it wouldn't work. I got weird errors like you got. I never did figure out the problem either, and finally gave up. |

Anita, among other things, he's using low ISO, which gives the rich you like. |

Thanks, Juliette.
I believe at the moment that 1x has lowered their standards to attract more paying members. You could also argue that their bias is based on personal preferences of the curators and hence the inconsistency as their personal preferences vary.
I am yet to understand why there is such importance given to 1x at DPC. Is it inertia from good old days? As I said at the start I think that some very average shots have been selected recently. I can give examples if anyone cared to continue the discussion on an adult level.

I think 1x's significance is due to the fact that one of their founding members is/was very successful here at DPC, former SC, member since 2002, etc.
