does anybody know the difference between the graphire 2 and the graphire 3? the graphire 2 is going for cheap on ebay. Is this a good way to get started with a wacom tablet, or are the graphire 3's worth the money? Thanks for your advice.

I know that wacom tablet get expensive as the pixels (DPI) go up, So like a printer the more pixels you can use the more you'll pay. The G3 has 2000 dpi on a Din A6 format.

I believe the major difference is where you keep the pen. On the Graphire 3 the pen can be insert on top edge of the pad and the Graphire 2 may not have a place for it on top, instead gives you a stand to put the pen (Graphire 3 the stand is included also).

Software included is probably different too.

If you use it for photography the Graphire line is very good. If you plan to use it for drawing look into the Intuos line (double the sensitivity).

Agreed, using the regular mouse is good for the large area stuff, but the pen makes it easy for the finer details...

I have a question on this subject (tablets). Does the software allow for changing the pixel density. That is- can you just use the entire tablet surface to do very fine drawing in a small portion of the image.. or is it a strict 1:1 ratio to the image ? Am I making sense ?
I want to work at very high pixel densities, like 3072x2048, BUT only want the tablet to work in small sections of the image so I have control over individual pixels... is that even possible ??

Thanks,
R

Most Photo Editing programs allow you to change the size of the brush or properties of the tools you work with so with a smaller brush/pencil you can zoom in on your work and work on that small area.

They are all nearly the same. They slightly change the look of the tablet and give it a new number. The software also gets a fresh look but remains basically the same.

Both the Graphire and Graphire 2 come with a pen stand that attaches in the top middle. It can be disconnected and used separately. The Graphire three may or may not come with a pen stand depending on if it is a bundled product or not but the pen can be snapped, on its side, into the top of the tablet.

Graphire

Graphire 2

Graphire 3
Pressure Levels 512
Coordinate Resolution 2032 lpi

Even though the Graphire 3 has double the coordinate resolution you really won't notice it. Or at least I didn't notice it at all when I gave the Graphire 3 a try. At home I'm still using the original Graphire. It's been many years now and still works perfectly. I've had to install new pen tips but they are cheap, ~$5.00 a pack.

Given how well these tablets last and if I knew the tablet hadn't been abused, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a used one.

So did you go with a used Graphire 2 or a new Graphire 3 or did you decide not to get one?

I have two Wacom ArtPad II tablets (the "original" 4x5, $129 tablet) for Macintosh (ADB connection) which I bought in mid-1995 for a book project, and which I still use now (although not so much).

I got the graphire 3. I was able to get it for $89 from dell bundled with a laptop I just bought. Thanks for all the advice though.
