How silly to think that any discussion regarding such a fabulous yet delightfully quirky pelican may be slapped with the label "arrogant." It just ain't so! :-(

For what you had to work with, I think you did fine. If you could have shot horizontal, it might have made more impact. Showing more of the environment/seclution. But yes, that other darn photographer. I like the lighting on the wings too, but find the face and eye in too much shadow. Some fill from a flash, or reflector will help. Although the reflector may freak him out! Just like that time with the deer. Long story.... Actually forget the reflector!
Either way, should have placed higher.

A bit more of the context, and a shot with her and her fella. When I took the one I entered, he'd wandered off to befriend a fisherman and she was hanging out in the center of the pier by herself. She has a bit of a lame foot (the one on the right) so she was much more hesitant to go hang with the fishermen, though she did later when her fella came back to get her. They really were a cute pair.

At any rate, I know now I didn't interpret the challenge very well, but I'm glad I got to share my pelicans, if for no other reason than to make Mae happy. :-)

(And I don't think I'd dare flash a pelican. I did flash a pigeon - see the Art_Roflmao entry - but I don't think I'd flash a pelican.)

Your bird shot was truly wonderful. I'm guessing it didn't make the tiny violin range because it didn't say lonely to people. Maybe if it had been horizontal vs vertical, we would have had more of a sense of an empty pier, and it may have been lonelier. When it's so close to the camera, you know that the cameraman is right there, and it takes away some of the sense of isolation.

Plus, I think people don't think of birds as lonely. Cloudsme did a lovely portrait of a cardinal, but it placed even lower.

In the loneliness challenge, people want to empathize. They just empathize better with people, abandoned places, zoo animals, etc, more than birds.

The photo is beautiful -- you're right about that. You just got hurt because people didn't think it fit the challenge as tightly.

It would have been a 7 from me in a regular challenge, but it was a 6 here because I didn't feel the isolation or the loneliness.

Thanks for the mention Wendy. I thought my cardinal was judged fairly. I've been in a bit of a bird slump lately. Not enough time to get the really good shots.

I liked the pelican shot. Gave it a 6, which is a good score from me. I especially liked the processing and the tilt. The detail of the bird was also nice. Maybe a little dnmc came into play. Whatever, who cares–its a good shot.

Awwww, Deb. My little offering in this challenge was an object that was alone, lonely, and all that,
and it only received a 5.18.

End thread hijack.
