I have davis and sanford tripod, I am looking for a better head for the tripod, is head are generic? I mean if I buy any other brand tripod, would it work or not. I think it should but wanted to know before I look for one.

Heads should be fairly generic. I think there are mainly two thread sizes in use. QR plates are not standardized at all, however. If I'm wrong, someone will quickly correct me.

Some mount with 1/4-20 thread, and others mount with 3/8 -16 thread. If you unscrew the head from the tripod, and your camera will screw on the bolt that sticks out of the tripod, then it's 1/4-20.

You can buy thread converters to go from 1/4-20 to 3/8-16 if your tripod is the 1/4 version and the head is 3/8th. Like this one on Ebay

Thanks guys! I haven't tried putting camera on tripod directly but will surely try it out.

What tripod head are you using now? There are a couple of earlier DPC threads about the merits, features and shortcomings of many different styles and models.
