This looks like another "Edward Weston" challenge which was filled with bunch of dummy accounts voting everything in sight low left and right. Hopefully the results will be recalculated after the challenge is over, because it obviously takes no genius to figure out what is going on here. |

I was moaning in comparative silence this morning. Then I read this thread.
Now, I can suffer in company. A nice flat five is what I achieved so far.
Mutiny, that's it. Let's mutiny. |

Seems like with every entry I submit, I keep getting worse votes, rather than better. Haha.
Either way, it's cool with me.

Are the SC looking into voting irregularities as it's this sort of thing that will lose the site members.
If it does turn out to be someone who gets their kicks creating dummy accounts just to get pleasure from slamming members entries I for one would like to see the site being for paid members only. |

I can understand where you are coming from, getting frustrated with low voting. But making the site for paid members only would scare off potential new members. If it was paid only, I would have never came in the first place. I was actually debating between becoming a paid member.
I think that people just need to debate on whether or not they want to enter "open" challenges.
Scores don't bother me, if I get a 3 overall, fine. If I get a 7, great. I'm looking to learn from here, and am having fun while I'm at it.
Someone may get their kicks out of low voting everyone... but so what... there are idiots everywhere.
So perhaps just entering "member only" challenges would solve the problem from the trolls in open challenges.

It may end up in 6+s but still over my average, which is good. |

That makes two of us.
I know I complained about my score earlier in this thread relative to my other challenge entries and it was erroneous on my part to do so. In order to compare scores across challenges you have to assume two things:
1 - The same people vote in the challenges.
2 - They use the same voting criteria across the challenges.
If you can't isolate for at least those two variables, complaining about your score, or where you think it should be, is fallacious at best.

Fallacious at best...seriously?
There are many great photographers complaining about the low balls that are being passed today, if it was the odd one or two I could see the your point but open challenges don't necessarily have the same voters as anyone can sign up and vote.
At the very least a boycott of open challenges should make the SC sit up and take notice.
The vast majority are here to learn, we learn nothing from a low vote and no critique at all. |

Feeling like beating the dead DPC horse...
A good few suggestions were made during my time (6-7 years) for the voting thing going on, also turns many off from the site, but I think SC policing the area just good enough, not much done.
I won't say anything else, since I gave up fighting for the cause here, I juts watch my vote when I enter, so far so good with all those entries since the year began... not to worry about the scores, and I am giving between 6 and 10 to open challenge entries, I think it's only fair one should be more encouraging since many others are very discouraging. |

it's my understanding that the SC is volunteering their time, so we should be thanking them for taking time out of their day to do so.
and you do learn from low votes... either a) they are purposely trying to vote your pic down. b) they don't like your pic. c) there are some sort of flaws in your pic. but most importantly d) it's an opinion.
and I agree that we cannot learn from No critique... but we can't force people to critique one another...
I have set a goal to comment on every photo on every challenge. I am sure that some of them are not helpful, some of them aren't wanted, but my comments are just my thoughts on an image.
If your shot is getting lowballed, just shrug it off. if you felt you did well, and happy with your photo, that's all that should matter. IMHO

I have none of the complaints that some of my fellow photographers seem to have.

Now here's a thing I totally disagree with. The main thing you learn about a low vote is that people don't like it. And about the critique, in most cases your own is enough ;)

Yes, I'm serious. The mathematician in me would like evidence to the contrary. Maybe the average person (ie: non-members) thinks the photos are junk. Who knows? The point being we can't simply dismiss them in one brush because we don't like the scores they give. I still stand that as long as the nebulous trolls people complain about vote consistent across any given challenge, and fairly, at least according to their criteria**, the system works.
We also learn nothing from a high vote and no critique. Maybe the voter really enjoyed the idea and didn't care for the technical aspects of the photo, or the converse, or both. Without comment, you're in the same boat as the low scoring voter.
CS
**As long as their criteria isn't voting for their friends and no one else, or some other shenanigan along these lines.
