Not just black and white though. You can also use a shade of grey which acts similar to lowering the opacity of the brush/eraser except that when you overlap an area you already worked on it doesn't "double up" the effect like it would when you're using a brush with a lower than 100% opacity. Comes in handy for fine detail work.

Actually both Bear and I were WRONG :O
After all these years I've just worked out that it's the background colour that matters when using the eraser tool on the mask. It needs to be set to black (or grey)to work on the mask - which if you're at the default black/white setting sets white as the foreground colour - but that foregrpund colour is irrelevant (try setting them both to black)Which means that if you want to use grey - as originally suggested by Beetle you have to alter the background colour.
In summary! Using the eraser tool on a mask is operationally similar to using the brush tool, but unlike the brush tool the black/white/grey settings are changed via the background colour picker, whilst the brush tool uses the foreground colour picker. Phew!!! |

I still say it's much easier to just use the brush and hit the X key to swap foreground/background. Forget the eraser. |

But the eraser works in exactly the same way, just the active colour is background not foreground. You can still use the X key for swapping etc (I'm a brush user BTW!) |

Let's all have a big controversy about it. ;-)
