Why are you guys even wasting your time with this guy? Clearly he is being closed minded to digital. This is a digital site. Go away if you aren't interested in digital photography!!!

Ok lets. Album vs CD, Album has MORE dynamic range, you just never hear it because you didn't own the right stuff. Doesn't mean that records are better, just different. But wouldn't it be weird if some website only played CD originated music and rejected album originated music. You would, probably, think it weird.

VHS - DVD, Vhs, in many instances it's easier to search a VHS, again, if you own the right VHS machine. Not all DVD's are created equal. I saw someone try and find a shot and it took much longer trying to navigate the chapter skips and determine what speed to use to locate the shot. It would have been much quicker to simply fast forward to the area they knew it was in and the do a visual high speed search on a VHS. Instead they kept chapter skipping and stopping, kept overshooting the spot, "rewinding" too much, and repeating the whole mess again and again. Most people end up using a speed that is no faster, and usually slower, than what A Video can do. Doesn't mean that Video is better, just different.

Horse and Buggy versus car. You are an absolute idiot if you think that cars are superior in all instances to a horse and buggy. Check back in fifty years and we'll see on that one.

Can string - cell phone, tell that to someone trapped in a building. None of your examples are absolutes. But your attitude that they are absolutes are what is wrong about sites like this. It's a smug attitude that belies the past and acts like there is only one course to take.

Hmmm... You make some really good points and I don't at all disagree with you. Too bad I never said digital was better then film and never said any of those things were better then the other. I simply said they would make better analogys. What do they say about people that assume?

That is exactly what I am saying. What you would have is digital photograph of a film print. And, most likely, much of what you like about the film print will have been lost in the transfer.

Originally posted by Alexx:

I don't agree with that, that's like saying a digital image is no longer a digital image once it's printed on paper.

That is also true. A print made from a digital image is a print, and not a digital image. You cannot make a digital image using an analog device such as a printer. And again, much of what you like about the digital photograph will have been lost in the transfer.

But that means that digital only exists because electricity exists.

So you are guys just may be space aliens afterall, and that picture of the alien coming out of the sink drain proves it!

Almost all film is digital at one point or another these days too.

E.g., any print you get from walmart is digital, no matter what you give them - film or CF card.

Then why exlude film at all?

Because you would have to digitise it to upload it (or try and push the paper through the telephone lines) ;)

So digital only exists because electricity exists? Without electricity, there is no digital. The moment there is a power outage, digital ceases to exist.

That is not a commonly held view is it?

Yeah I know, the picture can be dodged or whatever, but compared to using digital programs, are you going to say that film is more flexible than digital, because that is what it sounds you are implying.

Thats exactly why I said that I found your fist post naive. I´m sort of a beginner here and dont know much about photography but I know that there is nothing done here (at least not in the open challenges) that cant be done on film.
The digital technique gives a lot of flexibility but in the challenges here there are rules that restrict this flexibility even beond whats is possible to do on film.
Besides I cant see that flexibility for creativity in making art can harm it in any way.

What an annoying post. Trying to claim I'm the one who is close minded when a few have posted, digital, love or leave it. My whole point has been that the two don't need to be excluded from each other.

What have I said that was close minded?

If you don't know a lot about photography, why call others naive?

I think you are in denial. If Digital was never printed to paper, Digital would be a passing fancy, You deny the very foundation that allows Digital to be wildly popular, and then use this denial to put up a wall against the forefather to digital, which is film.

Who posted "digital love it or leave it" or anything close to that?

You're going to imply I'm the rude one after you posted the above?

Read the description under the site logo on every page... "a digital photography contest." That's what this site is about. End of story. Comparisons with film are a moot point.

Why can't we do both? For the same reason there isn't a Latin version of the National Spelling Bee. It is what it is because that's what it was intended to be. You are more than welcome to create a film challenge if you want.

Did I say you were rude? What I'm saying is you like to put words in people's posts. You just did it to me again

And yes, I was rude to you, but remember that was after you called me a name (I'd quote that post but it was deleted by an admin because it was a personal attack).

You use words like Photography??? They're not photographs.

But not for this website, is that correct?

My calling you a name came after you were hostile towards me, (also deleted). Go back and read my original post, the premise in it was not that outlandish.

Sorry, you are very wrong one more time. NONE of my posts have been deleted by an admin. ONE was edited by an admin where I was semi-rude to you, AFTER YOU CALLED ME A NAME! My semi-rude post was edited pretty quickly after I posted it, so I doubt you ever even seen it.

Two posts were deteted. One was yours and one was someoneelse from here that called you a name back.

So, PAY ATTENTION! NONE OF MY POSTS HAVE EVER BEEN DELETED AND YOUR NAME CALLING POST WAS IN REPLY TO THE SECOND POST IN THIS THREAD, which is still there!

Please try to get your facts straight if you choose to reply anymore. Pointing out all your errors and defending myself against all your false accusations is becoming tiresome.

That wasn't nice was it? I took the time to lay out a premise and you just blow it off the way you delete unwanted digital photographs, oh, now I get it.

Digital only exists on computer screens run by electricity and use of the word "photograph" are two breakthroughs that this thread has produced.

Hardly worthy of the troll label.
