Trying decide what direction I want to go with my next lens purchase.
My current lenses are:
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Tamron AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 LD Aspherical AF
I am looking to start upgrading to better quality glass and I am trying to decide between a general walk around lens or adding a wide angle lens.
Two lenses that have caught my eye are:
Canon 24-105 f4L IS USM
Sigma 24-70 f2.8 IF EX DG HSM
Haven't researched the wide angles much so I am open to suggestions.
Thanks,
-Mark

Well, both of the possible choices you list are good general-purpose zooms, but not terribly wide on APS-C. If you are planning on sticking with an APS-C camera, my suggestion would be to directly replace your 18-55 with a Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS. Next step would be to boot the 28-300 and get a 70-200 f/4 IS.

agree, replace the kit lens, get a tamron/sigma or canon at f2.8. i have the tamron 24-75/2.8 and love it, but i also have an ultra wide to complement it, you will be giving up the wide angle starting at 24mm on a crop body. stick with the 17-50/2.8 range.

| I just got the canon 17-55 f2.8 IS last week and loving it so far. Would recommend if your sticking with crop body for awhile. I personally find it to be enough reach for me. |

If you have something like Lightroom look through your photos and see what focal lengths you commonlymuse and use that information to help make your decision.
By the way, I use the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 on a cropped frame sensor and my walk around lens and love it. |
