From the thumbnails I have seen so far, there seem to be some pretty interesting photos in the challenge. About to jump in and begin voting/commenting. :)

Oh well, I really enjoy the shot and think it's by far my best image yet submitted to a challenge. I find it strange that other people don't.

I'm in the same boat. I've sold prints of my photo online, but doesn't seem to be resonating with the crowd here.

A mid-pack entry on DPC is often the stuff that will have others wowing about what a great photographer you are.

DPC is a tough crowd with its own biases and preferences. Real world success and DPC success are two different kinds of animals that don't have much to do with each other. And a lot of people would rather have the success that brings in the dough :D

they also go hand in hand though, many of the top ribbon winners are pro photographers or have moved on from here having cut their teeth etc or hung around, yeah there are exceptions like christoph, but the likes of mani, judi, allenp etc do well on here and away from here. there a big difference from joe public going like on facebook to being peer reviewed by a bunch of mean cynical harsh nasty haha sorry i mean fellow photographers ;)

Here come the 5's... steady and aparently unending a relentless march of slightly below mediocity votes.... XD

It's a good thing there is a week to vote for this challenge. I will be spreading out my voting over a few days (more than likely). I have GOT to do some homework... this place is GREAT for procrastinating. haha. :)

There's been a swath of mean voters recently, the last few have dropped my average by about .3! Still very happy with this entry though and the score...

True, but the main reason for this is you have to be a good business person in order to bring in the dough as you say. You can be a super talented hard working photographer but may not know how to use that talent to make money with. Many people do not want to go down that path hence they'd rather shoot for fun or as hobby only and don't even want to touch the business side of the photography. Running a successful photography business is just like any other business, you have to know how to sell your work and that takes a lot of skills way above and beyond just photography. There are "professional" photographers out there specially in the weddings photography industry that are amazing marketers, but with extremely average work that make over $15K/month.

+1
Once you have to make a living (and especially a decent one) you have to cater to the requirements of the market. There are quite a few professional photographers at DPC who don't do well in the DPC challenges.

Awesome job voting on nearly 300 entries and commenting on over half so early in the voting. Thanks for taking the time and setting an example.

That is exactly it. Once it becomes your full-time job, it won't be as fun as when it is your hobby. You can't just shoot anything you want anymore, you have to shoot what others tell you to shoot. If you are ok with that, then more power to. All it takes is one hell of a difficult client to make you regret the switch from hobbyist to pro :)

I receive my own share of low votes too but I am not bothered by it, because that is exactly what makes art beautiful. Different people see things differently. How boring would it be if all your votes were above say 8? I just try to have fun with photography while doing it as a side job, however I am extremely selective when it comes whom I want to photograph. I turn down whomever I find to be a potentially difficult client. I don't need the headache and I am not desperate, because I have a full-time job that I love.
