I'm sure there are good reasons why this wouldn't work, but has the site council considered having everyone submit a thumbnail-sized image of their photo in addition, rather than building it in the site?
This would:
*Allow users to crop their images for the best thumbnail appearance
*Make causal/new users less likely to submit super tiny photos without realizing
*Make browsing the thumbnails more representative of the actual photos
*Teach people about resizing and cropping well
Problems I see:
*Users trying to put a different photo in the thumbnail
*Users uploading files in the wrong slots (i.e. large file as thumb)
Let me know what you all think!

Don't think I like this idea for a couple of reasons.
1. If allowed to crop the image, then you get thumbnails that are different than the actual image. I personally can't stand thumbnails that only show part of the whole image.
2. If not allowed to crop, than it's just more work to submit and wouldn't change the way the thumbnail looked.
3. What would be allowed on the thumbnails? Could you advance edit to make it look better on an Open Challenge? If not then it goes back to more work for the same thumbnail.
just my take. |

As far as cropping, I think some images are very difficult to portray in the thumbnail size without cropping to accentuate the subject. I.e. a photo with a lot of white space looks good full size, but in the thumbnail it may make the subject disappear.
I agree that in some cases it is bad to have it look different from the original, though.

I think these are some good reasons to avoid the use of thumbnails until after voting is complete. I think too many opinions are developed, or cherry picking performed, based on the thumbnails.

Double Ditto. What ever happened to the proposal to make thumbnails unavailable until after the image has been voted on? It really would improve the voting process. I wish that change could be adopted sooner rather than later.
Having a thumbnail that represents an image more favorably than the usual downsized version of that photo doesn't seem appropriate for a site where we are judging the quality of a full size photo in competition with others.

Having a customized thumb to represent an image in a portfolio or forum thread is not a bad idea. Only the person creating the image knows exactly 'what they were thinking' and how to best represent the image in miniature.
However, custom thumbs during voting would only serve to encourage cherry-picking. That is, unless of course the very good suggestion of removing thumbs until after voting gets implemented. Then I see no problem with custom thumbs on the already voted on page.
