A neighbor posted this to our neighborhood listserve. I figured DPCers would have good suggestions. "Local" for us means near Washington, DC, but please name anywhere in the US. I'm giving him the URL for this thread, so feel free to talk directly to him. :)

Thanks!

I̢۪m exploring having a service digitize some old family photos for a picture book of photos, and photo DVD for relatives.

Anyone comfortable recommending, or warn against, a firm that does this.? I̢۪m leaning towards a local company to reduce the risk of the pictures getting lost in transit somehow. But if someone knows of a firm that really specializes in this for consumers, not Museums or Art Galleries, that would be great. I̢۪m sure the Smithsonian and the like have their sources, but these photos are only treasures to the family, not the nation.

ScanCafe does this, but they work by mail/courier and "outsource" the actual scanning -- haven't used them myself, but they seem to have a decent reputation here in the Bay Area.
