For those of you who complain that they can't match the studio professionals without a setup, try this:
1. Get several cardboard boxes (sizes based on the most common things you photograph) and
2. Matte black poster board in increments of four pieces sized to fit the sides of the boxes.
(This works with white as well)
3. Rip the leading side of the box (narrow side nearest you) all the way to the bottom edge, so you have an open side with a long path to it.
4. Line the remaining vertical sides of the box with the posterboard: Don't attach the posterboard to the boxes, cause you'll want to be able to move it a little to adjust shadows and edges.

With this setup, and at least two matched light sources, you can get a solid black or white background like the ones that are so popular on this site. Usually need to darken/lighten a bit in PS to get rid of minor visibility in the corners, but it comes out looking nice and sharp.

Anybody else have a tip "on the cheap?"
