So, originally I had installed PaintShop Pro X4 for my daughter on her computer. And as I am somewhat familiar with this program, I decided to replace it with Lightroom 3. Reason being, I do not want to edit any pictures with illegal tools, and I'm not 100% sure all tools that were used on my photo were legal (nothing entered yet).

AND,

The fact that so many of you have Lightroom 3, I figured I can get a clearer answer on if a tool is legal for a particular set of rules.

If anyone can give me a list of the tools that are legal for Basic Editing, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks in advance.

Happy Editing :)

There is no list of tools that are legal. You can use whatever you want. The rules are based on simple things, like no layers, no spot editing, no vignettes, etc. If you take a few minutes to read them, they are fairly clear. //www.dpchallenge.com/challenge_rules.php?RULES_ID=11

Essentially, anything that does selective pixel adjustments cannot be used. If an adjustment affects the entire image, (even if it is only working on a narrow color range), then it is ok.

For instance, if I want to apply noise reduction only to the sky:
Legal in basic: Limit noise reduction on the cyan to blue color range. if there are other blue tones elsewhere in the scene, they will also be affected.
Illegal in basic: Make a selection of the sky or duplicate the layer and mask to apply it to the sky.

I'm probably one of the few people here that tried lightroom and didn't love it. I guess the biggest issue is that I found it's review function inferior to Canon DPP. I did just upgrade from PSP X2 to X4, however. Corel's RAW lab is improved, but DPP is still superior. I also have several lightroom-esque applications that I got free for beta testing them.

just so you know lightroom can do some illegal things in basic, but not too much illegal in advanced.

@ Kelli: I have went through the rules again and again, but I thought that I didn't do anything illegal in Paintshop, turned out, I did. So I have to redo my picture. Figured I would use Lightroom since I am a fan of Adobe anyways (at least until I get Photoshop CS5 reinstalled on my new computer, as I am savvy in CS5).

@ Mike: Since you know there are illegal tools in Lightroom 3, maybe you can let me know if any of the following are illegal?

Changing White Balance, Exposure, Recovery, Fill Light, Blacks, Brightness, Contrast, Clarity, Vibrance, or Saturation.
I am relatively sure that changing the exposure, brightness, contrast, and saturation are all legal. Correct?
What about the rest?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks guys!!!

Thank you for the help! I am just waiting a couple more weeks until I get my new computer. Then I won't have so much trouble. Using programs I am not so familiar with is not so easy. lol.

I know a lot about Photoshop, as I have used it almost 15 years now.

yes those are all legal in both basic and advanced editing.

all the sliders are legal in basic since they affect the ENTIRE image, with the exception of the lens correction and vignette. stay away from the selective adjustment, ie the brush tool.

in advanced almost the entire set of edits is legal, except be careful of extreme edits of contrast. a recent DQ just happened where parts of an image were darkened so much as to remove part of the image from view, essentially turning them to shadow.

it keeps getting stated that you need to understand the concept of basic and advanced editing. basic editing allows you to perform global adjustments to an entire image, ie sharpen the whole image, darken the whole image, desaturate green from the WHOLE image.

advanced editing lets you perform selective editing so that you darken a sky, or do some dodge and burn, etc among others, you can also apply lens corrections.

once you understand those concepts you can use whatever software you like.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!
And I remember the DQ, it was Juliet's, right? That was an AMAZING photo she created!!! Too bad about the DQ.

Also, under the HSL tab, for Hue, Saturation, and Luminance, these sliders are legal, since they affect the color on the ENTIRE photo, right?
