Pretty good for what appears to be a low scoring challenge. My Macro entry is sitting at 6.16, which is a little surprising to me since that one is VASTLY superior from a technical standpoint.

Ugh. I wish I would have sat this one out. I'm currently on track to set a new PWS (Personal Worst Score) and have my first entry that finishes below a 5... |

I should have sat out the 'Blue' and 'Macro' challenges. Both are below 5. I was so depressed that I thought I'd just take a break for a couple of weeks, but then my wife came up with a mini object that was hilarious. I'm a tad over 6 on this one, ...and smiling again.

I really like my entry. The macro stays at 6 while the blue is constantly 4.8
Pretty happy |

I'm sorry, but most of these pictures are awful...not bad, awful. I sing high praise most of the time because I am so impressed by the work I see on this site so I don't feel bad at all in being honest when I don't see high quality photographs.
I'm so sick of seeing mini roses and alcohol bottles...Most of these don't even have any point of reference (which was part of the challenge)...
Oh well...there's gotta be a few gems in there somewhere, just have to keep looking! |

Personally, I liked the photographs that had a perspective that created an illusion of small regular object appearing larger or large object appearing smaller.
A picture of a miniature looks just like the picture of the miniature. |

But giega, that wasn't the challenge. I have to agree with thatcloudthere, alot of really poorly done shots this round, and more scores below 4 than ever (I voted on 100%, so my average is going to go way down) Only a very few above 7, but 2 tens and a few 9s. Tons of did not meet the challenge.
I don't understand why my photo keeps getting lower (4.5 and falling). I honestly think that it is one of the top 5 images in this challenge.

Well, I guess so. I found many pictures to be boring... |

im tempted to give up voting as I can't quite believe how many people didn't really bother with their photos this time round!
Most of them show just the miniature object, no context so it could easily be the real deal?
the challenge specifically requires you to show a point of reference to SHOW these items are smaller than the originals, how hard would it be to add a real-sized object in the frame or a finger or Something to show scale?
on that note i'm still scoring below a 5 at the moment and i'm not sure why as I definately meet the challenge but oh well - I think unless you have a professional setup somehow that its quite hard to compete with those that do have studios/lighting rigs setup in the homes, so i'm happy to just get good comments - which i am getting on this one so far! :) |

Think I'm going for my worst score. And the 1 comment just says "good" !!!!
I really hope that those who are voting low start giving some explanations soon. I did pay attention to lighting, DOF, subject, challenge rules, composition, etc. So what gives? |

I know I've made my couple complaints about the majority of the photos in this challenge. However, I've received two comments that say my image doesn't meet the challenge requirements. My interpretation is you want to photograph something that makes it look SMALLER. I have done just that in my photo, with perspective and a good title, too.
CHALLENGE: Compose and photograph something "miniature" in such a way that it conveys to the viewer that the subject of your photo is a tinier version of something that is normally larger. |

At least you have comments. I have one comment describing how the person has misidentified the subject of the photo ...

That is the opposite of the challenge, actually, goodhart. The first part of the sentence clearly says to photograph something miniature (i.e. a small version of a larger item) and the second tells us to provide a frame of reference so it is clear that it *is* a tinier version of the larger item.

Perhaps the reason for the low scores results from two opposite interpretations of the challenge.
I read the challenge as: The subject of your photo is a tinier version of something--it is a miniature. Take your photo in such a way as to convey to the viewer that it is a miniature--a smaller version of something that is normally/usually/in the everyday world larger. |

I'm a little deceived by my score and comments I've received like "You don't put something to show scale".
The fact is "I've put something!!!" there is only 2 things in my pic: my miniature object and this...but people didn't recognize it or simply don't know what it is (lack of culture? whatever...).
So... my score drops 3.0 in 2-3 hours... snif snif

I think both are valid interpretations, which I debated with EddyG here. Anytime the voters & photographers set their minds to conflicting interpretations, we get a low-scoring challenge. |

I think both of you, KaDi and airatic, are right. Your explanations add a little more understanding to the situation. I think the way the challenge is worded, it leaves things wide open to two opposite interpretations.
I personally haven't voted "down" any image if I see at least an attempt to meet the challenge, with some frame of reference. |

belette, I think (but I can't say for sure since I don't know which photo it is) you may have put an item in your picture, but not something that shows how the subject is a miniature of something larger.
For example, I could have a tiny post-it note on a life size desk, but that doesn't tell anyone that post it notes are normally larger. If I have the post it note on a post-it holder, or show a full size note with it, or write a note that falls off the edges of the paper, it is more obvious that this is a miniature object.
Sorry for the wierd example, but I had to think of an item no one had actually used in the challenge :)

I refuse to admit that both are valid interpretations...I think the wording is clear and concise.
The toy car beside real keys example is a good (albeit overused) one. |
