Sorry, this must have been asked about before.
Some cameras allows for combining in camera multiple exposures, basically the equivalent of taking multiple photos without advancing the roll in film photography.
I understand that in advanced this would only be allowed if taking multiple exposures of exactly the same scene, but combining different scenes is illegal (classic example, a pier and a passing seagull).
Is that correct?

It's such a nice technique and much more akin to photography than compositing, in my opinion, but I understand that only expert editing would allow for that.

In-camera editing is treated the same way as post-processing. If the multiple exposures are combined in one capture (by covering the lens between scenes on a long exposure, for example), then it's legal. If the exposures are combined after the capture, whether in-camera or on the computer, then that is subject to the regular editing rules on multiple captures.

Thanks scalvert, that 's what I suspected. I should have gone for a long exposure, but it would have been pretty complicated, good to know next time.
