Last fall Talent Search Live did an open call for models. I took my little boy and after 2 hours I was told he needed a portfolio...to which I quickly produced one. They wanted photographer info and of course I did his portfolio, they wrote my name and address down and kept a composite card I had made up for him.

Today I got an invitation from Creative Scouting to present a portfolio of my work for consideration; to be put on a team of local photographers, who will be recommended to do portfolios of models selected at an upcoming open call.

What I'm wondering is has anyone had any experience with Creative Scouting/Talent Search Live? We all know the horror stories of modeling agencies wanting large sums of money up front for portfolios and other services they offer, but has anyone had any experience with the photographers end of one of these companies? Any thing I should be prepared to ask upfront about practices?

I have had experience with both ends of this sort of company.

The rule is this:
"If they ask for money, it's crap."

If they are truly interested in you as a photographer (or your son as a model), they will not ask you to fork over a whole bunch of money upfront, they're gonna jump on you like a... well like something you would jump onto really fast, to make sure they can secure you as a photographer.

This is generally the case, however, just move cautiously, and trust your instincts, they could actually be asking for very necessary things, and they may cost some $$. If something sounds out of place, question, question, question, if they are legit, they should have NO trouble answering any of your questions honestly and clearly.

I hope I've been of some help! I also hope that they're truly interested in you as a photographer and not as a bank :-)

I guess what I really want to know is has anyone had any experience with this company and are they the legit kind of modeling agency as a photographer you will be happy to be associated with or are they one of those companies that try to get the model to pay huge amounts for the portfolio and then pay the photographer little after they take their cut.

I guess sometimes we all forget who all can read these forums. I just received an email from another parent who was doing her research also on Creative Scouting and thought I would share it...actually everything she had to say told me just what kind of company I was dealing with and I have decided not to be associated with the kind of practice they have going on.

I was doing a Google search on Creative Scouting and came across your question about their credentials on the DPChallenge website. Did you ever find a satisfactory answer to your question? My son has been "selected" at one of their scouting events and now they want $600 for him to attend some talent search weekend in Chicago. I, too, am wondering about the legitimacy of this group and wondered if you'd found out anything else.

There ya go thats what I found out about this company and it came from a non DPChallenge user...just someone who stumbled across my posting here.
