My entry in Jan 2012 FS got a score of 4.4792, and only two comments: "Righteous" and "Clever" - both of which I appreciate.
I am curious as to how this was seen, and reasons it may have scored so low.
FWIW, this is the sign outside of where I work, lit by a rather nice sunrise, with the shadow of a nearby tree cast on the sign. OmniSource is a scrap recycling company - primarily metals. |

I could definitely tell this was an effort at trying to create an interesting overlay of elements, but it fell short of that for me. It came off to me as flat looking as well as very soft and grainy looking and really didn't do anything to grab my interest. I gave it a 4, which for me often means something where I saw some knowledge and effort, but with serious issues. Hope that helps.

No idea what OmniSource was, the photo lacks any impact, looks overexposed to me and not very interesting so I gave it a 4.

This is a brilliant image! The circular logo forming the sun with the powerfully correct title Omni Source and the representation of life in the shadow of a tree. Unintentional story telling on a wall - the whole meaning of life caught in a grab shot. No eye candy here thank goodness - no wonder DPC didn't get it! |

It could be argued that some did get it and simply did not like it...that is also another possibility.
Also, the circular logo could possibly have been interpreted as being representative of some rather mundane object like a beach ball. One singular source of power might be viewed by some as "Solo Source" rather than "Omni Source"
Lastly, the tree is most certainly not representative of life. In these parts, a lot of trees look like this in the winter months and life in a tree is dormant at best, whilst trees that look like this during the summer months are.....well....dead.
All a question of perspective I guess.
I did like the image though... gave it a 7

It reminded me of this logo:
I did not vote, but if I did it would have been... Epic. |

does EPIC = 4 then, as wonderful = 8 or marvellous = 10
i gave it a 5, meh move on to the next one, i disliked the fuzzy text and wondered why someone had photographed a company sign |

I think I spent one minute looking at it and did only partially get the concept, with the help of the title. My fault, probably.
I gave it a 6 in doubt, but I wouldn't know what to suggest as for helping the concept come across more readily to somebody like me.
Consider also that the number of images in the challenge was quite high, took me 2 hours to vote on everything. Many people might have looked at it no more than a few secs.

I gave it a seven and a righteous. I never would have been so bold as to juxtapose a beautiful shadowy tree against a sterile corporate logo. This kind of stuff is beyond critique. Embrace your four and keep doing what you're doing.

I neither voted nor commented during voting, but this caught my attention by the energy or vibrations created by the zen of the tree shadow caressing the hubris of the logo. |

I got it. I appreciated the sunset colors and the shadow of the tree. But it isn't very interesting. It looks like a company logo that was oof. And I figured it was a recycling company.
That being said, I gave you a 10. Anti-brown trolling.
ETA: :-)

Thanks all for taking the time to express your opinions. Not only does it help me understand the score a bit more, but also the impression people got from the picture.
FWIW - This was my first entry with the iPhone 4S, and I have a devil of a time trying to hold it still - hence the soft focus. Second point is that it isn't all about the lighting, unless folks have a frame of reference for what the object looks like without special lighting. The sign is grey / dark off-white (concrete), and the orange tones were provided by a rather nice golden sunrise. Plus, I liked the juxtaposition of a non-living subject being overshadowed by a living organism (dormant this time of year, granted). |
