i'm looking for an alternative to comcast cable. i want something that can pull tv shows, movies, etc, off the internet so that i can watch what i want to watch, when i want to watch it, in whatever room i want to be in, on whatever device (tv, laptop, or tablet) that i want to watch on. i've heard of people doing this, but don't know what's involved. if i can get this worked out, i'll be able to drop my landline, as well as cable. (unfortunately, there's no viable alternative to comcast for internet connectivity, or i would have ditched them a long time ago.)

so, if you know how to set up an pc-based entertainment server, especially if you have experience with such matters, please post here or pm me.

THANKS!!

I have, for some time, thought about ditching our Dish Network. We got the Dish because we had just had enough with Time-Warner. The downside of ditching both, most of the shows we watch are on cable networks. Such as..the FX show "Sons of Anarchy"(Great Show). Also, our daughters with Disney and MTV. MTV is not the best, but I used to watch, and I always hold out hope they may play music videos again someday.
I talked with my wife about this just a few minutes ago, she informed me with our DSL, landline and Dish, it is about $100/month. Without Dish, the DSL would be $50. I would rather pay $50/month so I can watch college football in the fall and have Myth Busters on like now that I am not paying attention to.

IMHO, get the Hulu's, Apple TV's, things such as that...and also the DIY antenna that Bhuge suggested...not because it is cheap, it sounds fun to build and see it work. (I do stuff like that all the time...such as the softbox I built for about twice as much as it would have been to buy one) Do this, and see how much you still use your cable TV.

Basic principle...don't sell your car because you want to ride your bike everywhere, then need your car the next day. A little extreme, but the same premise.
