Looking now to buy a studio backdrop. I found this set on Amazon for $150. It's a 10' x 12' stand with two 10' x 20' muslin backdrops (one black, one white). It seems sturdy enough based on the rviews and a good fit for my space and level of commitment at this point.

It's nothing I can't afford, but it is enough to make me question if I'd be just as happy buying bedsheets or some such and improvising something. I'd be happy to hear your thoughts or experiences.

You can always try the fabric store, that is what a very helpful member here told me. Not sure what size you want etc... but it is an option.

Hey Brian. That'st the same kit I bought a long time ago. I'm very impressed with the stands, which would make your life so much easier, as you'd still need something on which to hang your sheets. Also, depending on what you want to shoot, sheets are nowhere near wide or long enough. |

I have been trying studio portraits myself and keep debating on dropping the cash on decent backdrop. I have been pinning a sheet to the ceiling. Although it has been a hassle to set up each time I think my money will be on strobes or an umbrella first and keep dealing with the hassle of putting the sheet up every time. The sheet looks great and I've even bought some balloons to use as gels on my only speedlight but keep getting sub-par images because my lighting sucks so bad (worklights from Lowes).
That being said that seems like a nice set-up. Have you tried Ebay? I have seen several for about half that price that seem about the same. Can't vouch for the quality of the ones I've seen though but a lot seem comparable to the one you posted.
I'm sure you pay for what you get but these seem like a good start on a budget and I think I will go with one of these when I'm ready. Complete set up

I'm steadily accumulating backdrops. I like the 10x12 muslins for size, weight and wrinkle-resistance. But I also play around with weird backdrop materials sometimes. My latest holiday creation: 3 cheapo pink plastic tablecloths taped together and covered by two layers of white tulle (I think it was 7 yards' worth, so 21 feet long, which I folded in half). The end result was about 9x10, I think. Worked surprisingly well for a Valentine's pet portrait shoot last weekend. The tulle hid the shiny tablecloth and the tape seams, and even draped rather nicely. Afterwards I threw away the tablecloths (surprise: someone peed!) and washed the tulle for another day.
All supported on a backdrop stand, which I got from either Adorama or B&H. Could not possibly manage without that! Not too thrilled with sheets because they tend to wrinkle in all the wrong places. Drapey fabrics are fun; the tricky bit for me has been finding fabric that's wide enough so I don't have to mess with hiding seams. Since I shoot a lot of pets (photographically-speaking) I need something really wide so that I have sufficient background as the pet wiggles around. Otheriwise I have to clone background in PP, which I'd rather not do.
I did have one bad experience on eBay when the muslin arrived looking NOTHING like its picture. I got most of my money back but had to scramble for a replacement in time for a shoot. Did not make me happy. |

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Sounds like it might be worth the price just for the stand alone. |
