I was amazed by this line:

Just imagine if you asked three people to describe what they see in the original, vs asking them to describe what they see in the final version. The difference in descriptions is what counts.

Fair point! My original could be described as a monkey on a blue background with a small triangle of the studio wall visible where the backdrop hadn't quite extended. The submitted version could be described as a monkey on a blue background. I would imagine though that most people would describe both as a monkey on a blue background:)

So if the advanced rules are result based, rather than based on methods used, can I assume that this old entry of mine would have been disqualified under advanced? It was validated under basic editing many years ago. The halo was created using the shadows and highlights tool in PS Elements.

before entering this, i sent it to sc with a very specific question, about removing a few remote street signs and a traffic cone. i got a relatively prompt response telling me it should be no problem.

i think using that resource more often would eliminate some of these post challenge debates.

and is it just me or does slippy look like a cross between ben stiller and stephen king in that pic?

I don't see where you get this from. Most people have agreed with the SC decision but we also can acknowledge that she did not set out to break the rules. It was a misunderstanding, which I would venture anyone that pushes the creative process has done. The rules are not black and white and sometimes a well intentioned edited falls on the wrong side of the grey.

Well, now I am confused, even at my low level of post processing: I can make things disappear merely by increasing the contrast/by upping the light/by downing the light.

Maybe we should have a Where Do We Draw the Line? challenge.
