I started out trying to do Hunger Games: Catching Fire:

But wasn't really satisfied. Some fire, matches, sparklers and the mockingjay pin it was all to similar to the cover of the book. Really, it had no creative spark to call my own.

So I went back to a concept that I felt I never truly got right. This goes to show how time and experience can and does go into the evolution of an idea. I was never truly happy with my second attempt back in 2004 at Hope Lights a Flame - inspired by In the Time of the Butterflies. So I revisited the concept.

This is the one I submitted for the challenge.

But then I thought some might ask where is the representation of time. So stickers on the candle and marker to create the ticks of a clock on a candle.

I did not submit this one even though to many it would fit the challenge more. Reason being is that I wanted to keep the symbology of hope simple. Not only that the position of the butterfly was not as good as my submitted shot AND lighting was not as fabulous as the submitted piece.

This my entry: and my outtake:

I prefered almost everything about the outtake except our rat Kain; I liked John's pose better, I liked the brighter light better and I thought it was generally a superior shot, yet Kain's random gaze up to the ceiling didn't work for me. I liked how in my entry, it looks like he's trying to read what John is writing. My entry grew on me and it did better than I'd thought it might.
