Maybe someone can give me some insight on this, since I can't find anything on the net whatsoever.

I just got my Phottix BP-7D battery grip for my, you guessed it, 7D. It powers the camera fine. It does not, however, have any of the other functions. When I turn the vertical grip on, it does nothing. The shutter doesn't actuate, the AF-ON won't focus. It just doesn't work.

Now, I'm only using one LP-E6 battery in the grip. I left my other one in a hotel and that's getting mailed back haha. I am going to try and put six AAs in the cartridge, but I figured the thing ought to work completely regardless of the number of batteries in it.

I hope I don't have to send it back to Adorama.

I am using current firmware, and have followed the directions to the "t".

Not sure about that one BUT the canon one has a dial to turn OFF the grip functions... Any chance that is also on the generic grip and in the.. er.. not on position :-) Just a stab in the dark....

I've always used the OEM Canon 7D grip for my 7D, and it works like a charm. Yours should work with just the one battery as long as it's in the right side of the grip. Since I always use two batteries off the top of my head I can't remember which side the battery needs to be in if you use one, but I believe it's the right side as your looking at the battery compartment. As long as your able to get the body to power up then naturally it appears to be in the right side. I use my AA battery cartridge on the rare occasion that I'm charging my batteries and still want to shoot. If your vertical grip functions are turned on as you say you should be fine, but since it's not working it could be that the switch itself on the grip is defective. Is it still under warranty? BTW...I always turn the vertical grip button off when I'm not using it, and I often just turn the camera and use the body shutter and buttons out of habit. You will see an increased battery life if you turn it off because when it's engaged it's just more circuitry that puts a load on the battery. Just an FYI. So, again...It sounds like the switch is not letting actually powering up the vertical grip features or it's a circuit board problem not seeing that it's powered. Either way...looks like you'll be sending it back. Personally I recommend saving a little more for the Canon grip which has the same texture as the body. I just don't trust most third party camera accessories.

I think he turned it on...based on him saying "When I turn the vertical grip on, it does nothing.". Having it in the right position was my first thought as well.
