It's sometimes hard to keep track of our own progress. Everything we do is so subjective. But I just did something that anyone with more than a year on DPC can do, which really set the record straight for me. Check out the images in your first year here. Then look at your most recent year.
Amazing, isn't it? |

I spent only one year here, but I can say that without DPChallenge I would never create images like these ones:
etc. etc. etc.
All these ones have been taken for a challenge, therefore without DPC they would never exist. That's why I love this place :) |

I haven't been long enough at DPC to make this comparison but I can see how you have developed as a photographer - amazing Johanna! |

I have just finished my first year here, but you are right. I generally focus on how much I don't know and how much I need to learn. During weeks like this when I have an entry in voting that is doing really poorly I can question if I have learned anything at all about photography. However, if I look back over my portfolio I can see I may make a misstep once and a while but I on the whole I am encouraged by how much I have learned. |

The key really is to stick with it, no matter how discouraging it gets. I know it's not fun getting low scores, but those are the images I look at most, to see what went wrong, why they didn't connect. Sometimes there's no answer, and it's just that my tastes are different from everyone else's, LOL!
Thank you, Margaret. Your first images here were WAAAAAY better than anything I posted for the first two years. |

I still like a lot of the images I posted my first year. And I've sucked worse this year than the past two. But hey, it is what it is!
Way to go, Johanna, by the way. You've REALLY kicked it up about a dozen notches! Congrats on all 7s on the profile page. |

I too love some of my entries. Back then I was far more enthusiastic about all the DPC exercise...
2003
2004
... this not that much but meanwhile I managed to get rid of the habit
... hmm maybe more refinement rather then (big) improvement

I peaked my second or third year. I just hang around for the donuts. |

That may just be the greatest gift of all - finding what you like best.

Now your avatar makes sense...
And Ken, sweetie, you've barely scratched the surface of your potential :-) |

When I look back at my past shots, which goes back several years, I don't think I've really changed much. Most of my stuff is still pretty mediocre, as it was then. It took me a while to get over bad scores but I think I'm pretty much over it.
I pretty much shoot what I enjoy shooting and if people don't like it, oh well. If they do like it, it's icing on the cake.
I did manage to get one ribbon though, so I was happy with that.

Alex, that photo is simply amazing (two sides of the same story). That must've taken a whole lot of work to make.
I've seen photos with the swirling stars effect before (like in the third one you posted), I've always wondered how people do it. |

+1 (though I managed to snag two ribbons, it was luck more than anything else). |
