Why not do private messenging on the website, instead of through email. people would be able to communicate more in real time and it would help those people who would like more dynamic content on their home page/profile page |

Basically, it is all browser based. You can add people to your friends list, then you can send them a message. If you receive a new message when browsing the site, there is a noise, and then a popup browser window opens and the message is inside. It is very quick and easy to use, and I suggest checking it out :)

It's a neat idea, and I've seen it before -- the problem is that it's an extra database hit per page on the site. The old DPChallenge was originally made with MS Access to tell you how unoptimized we were, but we had 5 database hits that just made up the header of DPC1!! We've drastically reduced the number of db hits for DPC2, and I think for that and a few other reasons, you can see a drastic speed increase on this site. Still, the idea is worth considering... I can think of a home page item or two that could be optimized further to decrease db hits.

I like it when I collect my mail and see a couple of DPchallenge PM's. I am supposed to look at a lot of online thingies, but it is too much work. Hitting "collect mail" is easy and does it all in one.
I vote for keep it as it is.

The way it is, is OK. If anything, showing who is online and providing a listing for the instant messaging system they use, in their profile, would be sufficient. That way, those who are open to instant messages can be identified and those who don't wish to be interrupted will be left in peace.

good point. we already have a list of who's on line (Community ==> Who's on line), and many people list their Instant Messenger program and name in their profile ... :)
