My favorite lens is working no more. If suffered a fairly major drop over a year ago and I was surprised it worked immediately after that incident. Now just today it comes up with errors using two different bodies even though the contacts are clean. On my 5D it shoots but shows an error. It does actually shoot an image I can see once I get past the error screen but the image looks awful. I can't get it to shoot at all with a 30D.
I go to this lens so often that it is really going to be tough to be without it :(
I called a local repair shop and their repair costs start at $249 if no major parts are needed. Cost would be more for major parts required and might need to go to Canon for repair as well if it is a major repair.
I called a number for the Canon West Coast USA repair and was told the repairs would start at $179 and more if it is something major. What was very painful to hear is that repairs would likely take three weeks!
I am not really sure what to do at this point. I really doubt the local repair shop will be able to tell me anything unless I submit it for repair. If it is a minor thing maybe I could have my lens back in a few days. If it needs major repair they will need to send it to Canon anyway which would mean waiting even longer for the repair than I would if I just send it to Canon directly.
Unfortunately because if that drop the lens endured over a year ago I can't help but think it will need a major part repaired.
Wondering if anyone here has had experience with getting a lens repaired at a Canon USA facility, and if so so did the repair time hopefully fall short of the three weeks they are suggesting to me? |

Canon will get it back to the store faster than they would get it back to you. For that matter, those of us who belong to CPS (Canon Professional Services) get expedited service as well. I think you have enough gear to qualify with CPS. It's worth a try.

Thanks Robert! I expect Canon might expedite a return to the local repair shop. And there is always the chance the local shop could do everything in-house very quickly. So I might as well try to make it by there to see them.
Sadly, I did not follow through on renewing my membership with Canon CPS services a few months back when the yearly expired :( |

| Sorry to hear about your lens fail. Canon repair has been pretty awesome (and quick) here in the east. I've needed to have a camera and a lens repaired 3 different times in the last 2 years and the turn around has been less than a week each time. I'm not sure what the Canon CPS is, but if it has special benefits that you can take advantage of, go for it! |

I sent in my 70-200 2.8 L for adjustment under warrenty, and my 300 F4 L after a drop. Both times it was done within a week, I sent in my 5dmk2 for the same drop- it took almost two weeks. I would give Canon Service a 10.
I was VERY happy with the results, I purchased the 70-200 IS new and was not happy with the sharpness - after I got it back it rivals my prime 300 for sharpness.

Yay! I got my favorite lens back already!
Thanks for the replies all :) It sounds like I might have gotten away cheaper (and possibly gotten a little more tuning done) had I sent it in to Canon directly for repair. But I took it to Cameratechs in Seattle and for $259 labor plus a $50 part (new diaphragm) they got it back to me in two days time.
It was a very sharp copy before the repair, so as long as it proves to still be sharp I'm a happy camper- with a little bit thinner wallet now :P |
