Are the new budget LED backlit monitors good for photo editing?

I see a slew of them were debuted in late 2011 at the low end of the market for IPS panel monitors.

While the LED backlights can be more energy efficient than fluorescent backlights, they typically do not give as wide a color gamut as a fluorescent backlight. This is because they rely on "white" LEDs, which have only decent color rendering.
A better LED backlight solution uses R, G and B LEDs, and such a backlight potentially would be very good indeed, but expensive. I'm not aware of any mass-market monitors using this type of backlight. FWIW, we *do* use this type of backlightin avionics displays.
