I know several links have been posted before for sites that present visual methods for monitor calibration. The thing is that they say something like, "You should be able to see distinct shades for every block in this scale." The problem is that there's a huge range of gamma settings in my desktop environment (think of a desktop environment as an operating system) and settings in the monitor itself that make it possible to see each block. If I set the monitor and gamma so I can just barely see the extremes of the scale, the display is dark and washed out. Is there a method for calibrating LCD displays other than buying an expensive device to do it?

I tried and had good results with Colorwizzard(formerly known as Colorific). It's $29.95 at //www.colorwizzard.com
