This was really interesting..... I recognise the images right away even without the main subject.
I am scratching my head trying to understand exactly why - It's just a really interesting thought about how the brain recognises objects and images. |

That is interesting. I didn't know photo #4. The rest, where I knew the original photos, I was able to guess. |

OK, yes I have seen that. It just wasn't ringing any bells with only the description given. |

Really interesting! I couldn't place #4 either (Sudan), but it was quite surprising how quickly the others were evident to me. |

So anyone got any ideas WHY we all recognise them? Added to a google topic when I have a little more time because I am fascinated by what is happening..... I know the brain is partial pattern recognision with other things on top but I am surprised why dropping the main subject - which is a big chunk of these images - does not change the result much. |

Well for one thing, these are the most iconic photographs of all time. There are very few that match the stature of these photographs. So, I think one thing the brain does--before you even look at the photos--is "guesses" what photos will be there, and knows that these will probably be them, which make it easier to place them.
After I clicked on the link and saw what it was all about, I guessed which photos would be there before I even scrolled down. I didn't actively try to guess, my mind just went there. And the photos that crossed my mind were the ones that appeared. That helped me to recognize Iwo Jima and Starvation in Sudan, The other ones I knew immediately. |

I also recognized all but the Sudan one. This inspires me to continue my "Iconic Image Jumble" project.
eta: ...maybe a side challenge? ;-)

I didn't get 4th and 5th. Has anyone a link to see the original 5th? I had never seen the 4th but immediately recognized the first 3 images. |

it's linked at the bottom: The Execution of Nguyen Van Lem
eta: Interesting story and an equally interesting quote from the photographer:
"The general killed the Viet Cong; I killed the general with my camera. Still photographs are the most powerful weapon in the world. People believe them, but photographs do lie, even without manipulation. They are only half-truths ... What the photograph didn't say was, 'What would you do if you were the general at that time and place on that hot day, and you caught the so-called bad guy after he blew away one, two or three American soldiers?"
The guy executed had just killed (or participated in killing) 30+ police officers and their families. War aint pretty.

yeah if you read on how america reacted to him, and the treatement he got the photographer did kill him,
sources said that Lém was captured near the site of a ditch holding as many as thirty-four bound and shot bodies of police and their relatives, some of whom were the families of General Nguyễn's deputy and close friend, and six of whom were Nguyễn's godchildren.
Adams later apologized in person to General Nguyễn and his family for the damage it did to his reputation. When General Nguyễn died of cancer in his new home of Virginia, Adams praised him: "The guy was a hero. America should be crying. I just hate to see him go this way, without people knowing anything about him."
cant find it now but the bit i read talked about him moving to the US and changing his name and getting a backlash of public anger at him.
