Ok, I'll take a swing, let's see if any of you can figure this one out. Not exactly a common object, but not rare either.

Or the laser guide on a CNC machine

Reflector for the remote part of laser surveying equipment? If this is right, then kawesttex got it first.

No-one is quite right yet, but Waddy, Yo_Spiff, kawesttex are all close - but kawesttex is the closest...

This is a very specialized unit, but again, not too uncommon. Think top-end of the usual suspects.

Ok, you guys are getting close...

I'll post a full image - see who can really tell me what this is called... (I can tell no-one in here is super-familiar with surveying... :) I'm honestly a little surprised, given the extremely diverse range of things you guys have nailed)

i would call it a transit... but i've only used the manual type... never the laser.

Might be a good idea to put this thread on hold while "abstract macro" is in voting?

all we have to do is have things that are not macro... just obscure items....

If it wasn't so advanced looking I would have guessed a lazer level.

:) I can see this isn't gonna happen. :)

You guys are all more or less right, with kawesttex being the first/closest..

It's called a total station, and MAN do these things make surveying a real blast! If you have ever used a theodolite or a transit, and then used this thing, you'd wonder how you ever managed before.

Back in 1994 my wife and I had to create a topographical survey of a lot we were buying in order to satisfy the County about certain restrictions regarding the navigable waterway (read drainage ditch) abutting the property. Boy, was that a pain, and was the County surprised when we presented our own data ;-)

You should see their faces if you show up with your own noise survey data when arguing about commercial traffic restrictions on residential streets.

I could do that, I have an old B&K meter. I'd have to have it calibrated though.

I borrowed the meter from the university where I was doing my grad work. The funny part was when I explained how the report their "expert" consultant had done was wrong because they had made conclusions based on modeling rather than measurements. They were none too happy about having paid the guy and less happy that the company that wanted to run gravel trucks through residential neighborhoods was going to have to take another route. Well, the board members who didn't live in the neighborhood in question were upset.

I could probably take that "borrowed meter" approach as well... I have a buddy who is an engineering manager for one of the better manufacturers of sound measurement equipment.
