Yes, it is an echinoid, and it is a type of urchin, as is a sand dollar. Perhaps I'm being too picky, but a Google search should turn up the name of the variety, which is like a sand dollar, but not one.

Nope... but I have to admit that it could very well be. Well, now I'm faced with a dilemma... it seems there are a lot of choices that would be so close as to be essentially correct, and so we have two guesses that are essentially just outside the bulls-eye.
I guess apercep was earliest with the "near-miss" so I will award the win to him.
It's most commonly known as a Sea Biscuit, and here is the full image:

This example came from the Pacific, Kauai to be precise.

ETA: now that I think about it, I could have done something with this object for "abstract macro" darnit!

Ah ha!

I know what that is now... And I know why I knew it. lol..

For now, I'll say it's an x-ray generator... The funny part is that I'm actually right. ;)

I'm guessing someone went to the dentist?

Now that you point it out, I think your right!

Heh... No, this might be at the dentist's office, but not in the exam room.. It's a rather mundane item - but it really can generate X-Rays... (seriously... But for now I'll just tease everyone else with hints.)
