Great, now I've got Steppenwolf running through my head ;-)

No, not a carpet. Definitely psychedelic though!

Steppenwolf? Born to be wild I imagine? Better than this, which I can't get out of my head now :D

No guesses? I actually thought this might be easy. Though the size may be fooling folks.

Double sided tape, or another similar adhesive product.

I was shooting this Friday outside in the heat and humidity when I got the dreaded lens error. Should be repaired free of charge, but still a PITA.

It does involve adhesive. It has a specific purpose that is not to hold something together. The item I'm looking for information on is the "psychedelic" area.

It's reflective tape, like the stuff used on road signs or as reflective targets for tachometers

It is reflective but not really tape (although the difference is mainly in what it's used for). The item has a very specific use.

Nope, not a heat shield.
Hint: the "device" bridges the gap between two parts, but is not intended to seal the gap.

looks like the metallic tape that used to hold new cd cases together.

Hmmm. I think I actually need to accept this answer. It is, in fact a "holographic" security label, you know, the "warranty void if tampered with" kinda thing.

Very specific answer required.
