Nope.
ETA: and nope to the others as well. Ah, OK, it is a "thing" but let's narrow that down a little!

That I knew. |

Hints:
- It has an electrical, but not electronic role that is not transient (like a lightning arrestor) but continuous
- I have several of them in use around the house, though many folks don't
- It's part of a larger whole, and without it, that whole will not function
- If the whole device doesn't function, I will be greatly inconvenienced, more at some times than others
If you think about the above, the situation may at first seem hopeless, but eventually the light will go on!

A fuse. Looks strange if it is. |

Not brass, but copper, and not chrome, but the "neighbor" of the aforementioned material. |

Nope, or if it functions like one, something has gone wrong! |

Coupling for an alarm system, or a solar panel/battery system.

Nope to all so far... couple more hints:
- The finish on the outside is decorative
- When I use the device, I might hum a tune made popular by Debbie Boone (OK, not, but you get the drift) |

knob for a dimmer switch.
Sensor for an automatic light switch.
And the song is "You light up my life" |

Not a knob, though you do turn it like one to install it. Not a sensor, just a conductor when in use. |

Ok... been thinking about this one for a while.
I'm thinking it has to do with your water system in a way. Do you have a pipe-in-pipe system (not sure about the English terminology here)? Is this a blind plug? The only electrical function then would be as ground.
And not very convenient without it when you need to use water. |

Is it something like an x-10 lightbulb socket?
Or perhaps a lightbulb adapter of some sort?

I'm still on water - seeing the copper and stainless steel (I think). Faucet push button? |

It is definitely associated with lighting, but not a part of a flashlight. Neither is it associated with water in any way. If we don't solve it soon I will post a (slightly) more informative photo. |
