I'm going to try to get some photos at a big parade later today. I don't want to weigh myself down with too many lenses. Which one should I use: the 24-70 f/2.8 or the 70-200 f/2.8 ? Thanks in advance for the input.

I think the 24-70 will serve you better.

Edit: Do you think two lenses is too much? If I was you I would take both but no more, that way you're not carrying an arsenal, but you won't be wishing you had more/less zoom.

Depends on where you'll be standing, of course, but I'd go with the wider angle 24-70.

Hmm tough decision.

The 70-200 will allow you to get more intimate and provide some nice background blur making your subjects stand out. When you simplify your photos they tend to come out better, especially when you have to contend with ugly cars/buildings and distracting subjects on the street.

The 24-70 will give the viewier the "big picture" and it will also allow you to capture parts of the parade more quickly as the floats (I assume it's that kind of parade) move by.

I guess I'll leave the decision up to you, or let others comment. :) Normaly when I shoot street photography (which is somewhat simliar to parade conditions) I use a fixed 50mm f1.8 lens because it's fast and the only real variable to consider is creating an appealing composition.

something between 100 and 200 mm

I went to a parade last week (Utah has a parade on July 24th) and I sat about 10 feet from the edge of the street. The street itself was two lanes wide on each side, plus a center lane down the middle. (I tell you this so that you know how far I was from the parade itself)

I used my 75-300mm lens exclusively and I really liked some of the closeups that I got, especially of the clowns and the parade queens.

But whenever an interesting float went by, I found myself wishing for a wider lens. You just can't fit a float into the picture when you're shooting 75mm only a short distance from the parade. And at the speed the parade is going, there's no time to change the lens.

I know the glass on these 28-300mm lenses isn't up to the quality of the better lenses out there, but sometimes I wish I had the flexibility of a 10x zoom!

The alternative, of course, is to have TWO cameras - one with a wide angle lens and the other with a telephoto. It only costs money...
