So, here's a question from a newbie about getting all of my strobes connected. I have my Canon 7D, which has built in wireless functionality, however, I don't know if always want to be limited by line of sight. I have a 580 EX II and a 430 EX II, along with a two light stands/umbrellas, all that jazz. My main question is: what is the best way to get these all connected? Should I rely on the 7D's wireless abilities to fire both the the 580 and 430? If I should use a sync cable, which version do I buy exactly?

I realize all of this could be solved with a few Pocket Wizards, but I do not have that kind of money sitting around right now.

I hope these questions aren't too ridiculously easy to answer, I've looked around an awful lot, and some of the terminology associated with sync cables and such can be a bit confusing. I just want a voice of experience to chime in for me.

Thanks!

That communication you see is eTTL..... older pocketwizards or syn cables will not work in anything but manual. The newer pw's and stuff like radiopoppers will work with eTTL but they ain't cheap (there are some Chinese knockoffs that seem to be ok if you want to try that path).

I think you need to figure out what your trying to do first....

//www.paulcbuff.com/cybersync.php -- just as reliable as pocket wizards and far cheaper.

You'll need one of these for the 430ex -- //www.paulcbuff.com/slfa.php

Since you asked about cords, you will need a Male to Male PC sync for this setup.
With Screwlock
Non Screwlock
Note: Your camera and 580 flash are compatible with screwlock, your 430 is not. If you need a 10m you'll have to do a 10m cord (male to female) and then a short connector male to male cord. Screwlock is more secure as it literally screws in. Your 430 does not have a pc sync, so you're limited on how to sync that flash. I would suggest using the cord to the 580 and then use it as commander. Alternately, you could get a PC male to hotshoe to run to your 430, and then run your 580 in slave mode. Or, you could run a pc sync from the camera to the 580 then hotshoe to hotshoe from the 580 to the 430. There are other potential solutions using various sync cords, as well. Most of what you can think of will be available through FlashZebra, and if it isn't, then finding it might elsewhere might be a chore.
I'm not familiar with the sensitivities of the Canon line, but I find that the slave mode of my SB900 is far more sensitive than for ittl.

ETA: Flash Zebra is great to do business with, despite the sorta low budget looking site. I've bought numerous cords from them and the service is very quick.
