Hi from snowy, cold northern Alberta Canada! I attended a photography workshop at the end of October and the instructor had some parting words for us: practice, practice, practice. Oh yah, and maybe you want to join a place like DP challenge to become a better photographer. So, I actually joined about a month ago and have submitted some photos already. My scores are up and down but I have to say that on the day the voting ends I feel like a kid on Christmas morning - can't wait to see that score! I'm not a very experienced photographer but I have learned a lot so far (had to google HDR to see what it meant when that challenge came up). It's been a ton of fun so far and I am enjoying this more than you could know. I think I've become involved with a bunch of really great people. Cheers!

At first I groaned, thinking you were another spambot, but you seem to be an actual person. :)
Welcome to the group. Feel free to ask any questions you have, but try to search the forums a bit- there's a ton of info out here already.
I see you've also started commenting on shots, which is great. Few things will hone your abilities more than looking critically at photos, evaluating what you do and don't like about them.
Also, we have some Tutorials and a How'd They Do That section where folks explain how they produced a specific photo. DPC is a great place where you'll get out of it what you put in.

Don't fret your scores too much- DPC is great for learning but also has a very defined aesthetic that you're welcome to embrace but isn't the only road to take.
The Side Challenges are also really nice and are more laid back. There is no voting and the emphasis is on commenting and experimenting in new techniques.
Make yourself at home and don't feel sheepish about asking about any questions you have.

Welcome to DPC, Mary Ann. It's not all sunsets and roses here, but I hate those things anyway. ;-) Challenge-wise, you're off to a pretty good start! spiritualspatula posted some good advice. Looking forward to watching your progress.

thanks for the welcome, and especially the tutorials advice. I`ve been a bit afraid to comment on other people's work - being a newbie - but the info on how to comment and how to appreciate & rate the artistic photos was very helpful.
I`m off to phone my son to find out some heavy metal song titles. Lord knows he has caused me to listen to enough of them............I can already hear the pause when I ask him, cuz he`s gonna think I`m having a mid-life crisis! :)

Hey Mary Ann! Always glad to see another Nikon-toting Canuck here! So whereabouts in Alberta are you? And just curious, who's the person who mentioned DPC? I know we have some members kicking around the west.

And welcome to the jungle, btw...muwahahahahaaaa...;-)

Welcome new one! I liked your "Overexposure" image. Enjoy your time here, and be comfortable. Don't touch that "Update" button, it's addictive.
