I shot a portrait for a best-selling author. She is going to use it as her author photo, and I believe she is printing in the millions. What the heck do I charge for usage fees? Would royalties even be a factor?

to clarify, it is going to be her author photo in the physical copies of her book, as well as her publicity photo. for instance, it will be in Forbes magazine in the coming months. i just took the photo literally yesterday, but i want to know where i go from here.

Yes, you should (try to) charge a standard stock royalty fee. Search for a stock calculator in the forum threads (I can post a link later if you can't find one) or go to a stock site (Alamy, Corbis, Getty) and price out a similar photo for similar uses.

I'd expect the figure for all of those uses to be in the three-figures, and possibly even four (i.e. more than $1000 total); make sure you license the specific uses and don't "sell" the photo, and try to keep the ability to use it yourself if not for other commercial use (for which you'd need a release).

ETA: Links are in my post and Skip's post in this thread -- make sure you read his whole post; he has good advice based on experience ...

firstly, congratulations! this is a great opportunity!

secondly, this is the real deal where real money needs to be involved. there are some good links in the post Paul referenced, especially then one about a book cover shoot.

here's some more ammunition:

we have no budget for photos
When Publishers Request Freebies

this is a perfect place for a company to try to shave some money and it's up to you not to let it happen. you might even consider getting an agent to represent you in negotiating with the publishing company, rather than you trying to deal with the author. it will cost you a percentage, but you'll most likely get more.

good luck!
