My 9 year old and 6 year old (almost 10 and 7) both want iPod touches for Christmas. I feel they are a little young for that (I don't think they'll take care of them properly), so I really don't want to plunk down $200 each for them (plus, I don't have the $400 to spend).
We want something as similar to an iPod as possible, but as cheap as possible. I've been exploring amazon, etc. and reading reviews until my head spins.
Any suggestions?
(Our "wish" list -- touchscreen, plays music/videos, can download angry birds to it) |

Check out eBay for older iPods. Always plenty to go around. Will attach some links when I have the chance. |

My 6yo plays 'the gadget' (i.e. my iPod Touch) all the time. Although he puts in down in random locations around the house and I'm always searching for it.
I'm sure there are plenty first and second generation models on ebay. They can play Angry Birds, but more recent games won't work because the os is an old version and not upgradeable (hence the reason you'll find them on ebay) |

I have a Sandisk Sansa Clip. Inexpensive, small and rated highly by the tech media. Mine is the original model and works great, but it is simply an MP3 player. No video or touchscreen. I saw the newer version in an 8Gb model for pretty cheap the other day, but I forget where.

an ipod touch is more than an mp3 player, its an iphone without the phone. so the question is do they want an mp3 player or an ipod touch.
you may be able to get an android touch device as a prepaid phone.

The Sandisk Sansa product is pretty solid. We had some of their older porduct, and my only complaint was that the battery was not user replaceable. That's pretty much common to most of the units, including the iPod, though. I don't know if the more modern Sandisk units will compete with the iPod in versatility (playing Angry Birds, for instance).

If they want the look and feel of an IPod, then you are stuck in Apple land. If they want anything that plays MP3s then there are a whole lot more options. But if you give them the latter and they wanted the former, then they will be unhappy with Santa. As far as the quality of the non Apple products, My daughter went through 2 IPods, an Itouch and is about to need a replacment Iphone while my Creative Movo has been playing along these many years. Im sure some other mp3 players are poorly built, but some are much better put together than the Apple products, though their interfaces are much intuitive than the Apple.

The sound quality on iRiver historically outshone iPods, though I am a recent apple convert due to iPhone. They do some inexpensive mp3 players like the T9 and iriver still gets favourable reviews. I've owned 2 irivers in the past and loved both of them. The first was a whopping 256MB :-)
