My dog is pregnant and is on either the 64 or 65 day depending on which day she got pregnant. She is not showing any signs of going into labor and I am starting to get worried. This is her first time having puppies and she is a very small dog I don't know if I need to be concerned. I plan on calling the vet tomorrow, but I am wondering if anyone else has experience with this. Does going into labor late mean larger puppies and a harder delivery, or is she going to be fine? The only signs I have noticed is that she seems to be paying a lot more attention to her rear end, she licks in that area a lot and will occasionally jump up and bite at it. I don't know if this means she is having contractions or if the puppies are jumping around and it is bothering her. She has done this for the last 5 days but it nothing further seems to happen.

I would have called the vet today but since it is Thanksgiving they are only on emergency calls. I'm hoping it's not the same thing for tomorrow, I know many places take a long weekend. I'm hoping that is not the case with animal hospitals.

CALL THE VET... Usually they do that when starting labor and birthing but 5 days... I'd get her into the vet in the morning!

Most decient size towns have an after hours Emergency clinic or hospital (and yes it costs MORE) The normal gestation is 62 to 65 days, so you are right on the end of normal, the five day licking and first pregnacy would seriously bother me. Is it your little shiz tu (sorry can't spell that) The smaller breeds do tend to have more trouble with large puppies. I use to breed and raise Afghan hounds and at this stage with a first time bitch, I'd be takeing her in to a vet in the morn. IF she goes into active labor, panting restless walking circles, licking and chewing her rear and dosen't deliver a pup in 4 hours, you may need to put on steril glover and insert one finger to see if the first pup is turned sideways, They should be head or butt first, if sideways you can gentley try to roate it into position, and yes she will not stand well for this, but if you don't have the option of a emgerency clinic, it will need to be done...

There are a LOT of whelping pups videos on the internet, go find one and watch an assisted birth, it will help you understand what I'm not getting correct here.

Good Luck and We wanna see new baby pics!!!

Thanks I will call first thing in the morning I miscalculated on my first post she is actually day 63 or 64 but tomorrow will be 64 or 65. So I really think something must be going on. She seems to be doing fine even playing, eating normally and her temp has never really dropped so who knows what to think. But it will be reassuring to talk to a vet and see what is going on. I probably should have called on Wednesday but it was still within normal range so I thought I was just being impatient.

I had an English Staffordshire that snuck out of the house and got pregnant as a result, a stray dog was outside and before you knew it, it was over..she seemed to take a while to get ready for labour so we ended up taking her to the Vet. Turns out the puppies were too big for her and she wasn't able to deliver them. So taking your dog to the Vet would be a good idea to get her checked out.

The male is only a little bigger than she is, but not by that much so I'm hoping that is not the case. She is a shih tzu but a very petite one.

Hope everything works out Jenn, if in doubt the vet is always the best option.
