What are the best settings for taking sunset pictures on my FujiFilm Finepix S5000?
For color mode, do I use standard or chrome?
And should I put the camera in automatic and let it chose the shutter speed and apeture? |

My suggestion would be to put it full automatic mode, set the EV to -0.7, set focus on the brightest (or mear the brightest) part of the sky, and snap away.

Nothing Can be Well done with automatic settings in any camera. Use your feeling and set it manually acording to the scene light. How to do it? Using the exposure concepts you know. |

My two highest-rated photos, made using something close to e301's formula with an old 2MP P&S camera ...

If there is a dial icon for sunsets, then I would certainly start there. Engineers that know the S5000 "system" have established this program as the "best" setting for this type of photograph...in general. Start there. Then adjust based upon your results. |

The best way to take sunset pictures is to bracket your shots. Try different settings and one or two of them should be to your liking.
Take a shot of the sunset with no EV change. Take one at -1 EV then take one at +1 EV and you should have one to your liking. You would have 3 shots to choose from.
Taken with bracketing.Of course the clouds were moving pretty fast so the shot may look a bit different.
Remember that the camera lens is just like your eyes and that you and the lens should not focus directly at the sun.

Both of these
were taken with a Fuji 2800Z, using that technique.
It should be said that full automatic mode doesn't change anything - it just set your exposure times and apertures for you. Sometimes, it gets those right.

I use Av mode, usually at f/8, meter on the brightest spot, then shoot with a -1 exposure compensation.
