Starting my 1st website. I'm leaning towards Smug Mug as my gallery. But what do people do about blogging? Do you have another host site for running Wordpress?

Thanks

Yes, I became a member 7 years ago but never posted any photos as I did not think they were worthy. But I'm finally going to show the world my images, thus the question in regards to SmugMug & Blogging.

I do visit this site every week however and enjoy looking at everyones challenge photos.

Thanks

Wordpress is a good and easy option for blogging. Who do you use for hosting. You could easily create your blog as either a subdomain --> www.blog.mywebsite.com
or just as a different page --> www.mywebsite.com/blog

no need for additional hosting.

I don't know your gallery needs, but there's also Zenfolio.com and ArtistWebsites.com. I have galleries on both (nrshapiro.com for Zenfolio and neilrshapiro.com for artistwebsites)

ArtistsWebsites has a built in blog which is then associated with your gallery. It's free if you just use the sister site, fineartamerica.com or $25 per year for artistwebsites.com). The good thing besides cost is that they provide you with a fair amount of free publicity and traffic through fineartamerica.com (even if you go to artistwebsites, you get a site on both)

Zenfolio is just better and 33% cheaper than Smugmug (I was a SM customer for 3 or so years before switching). Some opinions and user group info here

Thanks for the help so far.

I'm just starting so all I have so far is just the domain name(s) thru GoDaddy. No hosts yet.

I would like a Wordpress blog, so I could use goDaddy to host or maybe BlueHost. But I would also like a gallery that would do all the printing, mailing, accounting for me. So I was thinking SmugMug. But Zenfolio looks good as well.

So my question is, if I use SmugMug or Zenfolio as my gallery host, do I also have to get another host like GoDaddy or BlueHost for my Wordpress Blog? Foe those with SmugMug or Zenfolio, are you also blogging?

Thanks

It's an interesting question, so I did a little search.

There's a user plugin that lets you blog from Zenfolio. Here's info:

//forums.zenfolio.com/blogs/blog/archive/2011/11/07/will-hughes-photoblog-plugin.aspx

And an example of it in action:

//willhughes.com/photoblog-via-gallery

Apparently, he's charging $10 for the plugin.

SmugMug really isn't setup for blogging. Unless you are a CSS wizard, you are going to find it tough going. It's not a regular webhost, and you have to do customizations in very particular ways. There are some very good people at dgrin.com that are very experienced with SmugMug and the intricacies of customizing it.

You'd be better off picking SmugMug or Zenfolio and using another host for your blog. If you want them to look integrated, you could make them look similar by using html and CSS and themes to match them up.

Thank you for that answer. Having the 2 different hosts is what I assumed, and probably the easiest.

Thanks

Actually, smugmug now has a "share" feature that allows you to post pictures/links to your facebook/twitter etc.

In looking at it right now, you can also "share" with posterous, tumblr, and wordpress.

Can't vouch for how it looks or how easy it is though.

Since it's being talked about, there is an upcoming free online seminar about WordPress put on by Creative Live.
Word Press for photographers
If you've never done them, the way they work is you can watch them free streaming as they happen. They are literally ALL DAY and you do get to see everything done, for free. If you register/pay before, afterwards you will be given a link to D/L a high quality edition to peruse at your leisure. You can also do this after you watch it streaming, but it is cheaper by $20 if you prepay.
The interface is easy to use and the information is typically good stuff. I've sat in on several other ones from Creative Live and really recommend them.
